Are you sure you're getting fuel? Draining the tank and changing the fuel water separator's, would contribute to a loss of prime in the fuel system and may need a little help getting primed. Did you fill new separator's with fuel when installing? One of these issues will create a problem with prime alone, let alone both. Also you mention you changed plugs. Did you replace plug wires in correct order? When the engine ran prior to service, look at what you changed to isolate the culprit.

Sounds like your carbs might be gummed up with that varnish too. I am pulling the deck up this weekend to check on a possible leak from the port side fuel fill. I also need to check out the port sending unit, as my gauge is not working.

Yes just pulled carbs cleaned them gummy varnish and lifted deck that deck is heavy on the 290 but that's how I'm going to get the rest of the fuel out. Good luck with yours

Yes I pulled my deck off too, and it is a heavy SOB! replaced the fuel fill hose which was leaking. I cleaned up the sending unit terminals while I was there and tightened up all the clamps. I definitely don't want to lift up that deck again anytime soon!
