Best Fuel Tank Inspection Port
« on: January 21, 2017, 11:07:03 AM »
I want to cut all hatch openings prior to installing my deck.  I'm trying to decide on the best option for a fuel tank inspection port.  At this point I see three options:

1  I can go with a round inspection port, either screw down, twist in or cam latch.

2  I can go with a ready-made rectangular hatch.  Something like this http://greatlakesskipper.com/jim-black-581-1317-04-13-x-17-inch-arctic-white-boat-deck-hatch

3  I can cut an opening and make my own rectangular screw down hatch.  This would require resealing with silicone after every inspection but would be the most water tight.

Each of these options have advantages and disadvantages which brings me to my question:  Which do you consider a higher priority for fuel tank inspection?  Ease of access? Or water tight?

Water tight is the most important feature to me. Reality is unless we are checking for a problem they are rarely ever opened.

Another good manufacturer of hatches is Rabud. I've had good luck with their offshore hathe and round inspection ports. I know Aquasport used them as original equipment. Plus they are made in Florida.

It's between the console and leaning post.  Right now I'm leaning toward building a rectangular hatch that will be screwed down and sealed with silicone.  Twelve or so screws didn't seam like a major inconvenience if it keeps salt water off the tank.

Definitely would want something flush then...  You can build something better than some plastic pos for sure!
