Newbie wanting to share my 1984 17 Project!

Hey All i have owned a couple Aquasports throughout my 26 years of existence, one of my favorites being a 1971 222, but i recently acquired a beautiful all original 1984 17 that had always been kept inside and owned by the same person since new. I couldn't pass this boat up but I also couldn't leave it original I've always been a sucker for some light modifications. There are some missing photos in the timeline unfortunately but the removable deck plate over the fuel tank was the only place in the boat with rot. When the tank was removed i stripped the back and reglassed 1/4 marine ply back in, and with the extra teak left over from the helm pod i was able to make a nice teak helm pad! The tank as you can see was completely shot. I had my metal fab guy make a new 27 gallon aluminum tank that I epoxy primed and foamed in. All new fuel lines/ wiring etc. Also a reid style float switch. Under the console i was able to fit a 9 gallon fresh water tank with plumbing to the stern with a nice retractable shower. The forward cooler seat is completely foamed in and i added a drain with a hose that travels to the transom via the rigging troff i also added a gasket and cored with foam the back of the hatch for extra insulation. There are no gauges in the boat everything is run thru a garmin 741xs via nema 2000. Fuel level, water level and all engine information as well as the stereo, this really gives it a clean custom look.

The gel coat on the boat was all original with very minor dings and scratches. I wanted to rid the boat of its 80's ugly so the decals had to go. Unfortunately this meant all new gel on the hull sides to rid the boat of the decal shadow. New boot stripe and stainless rub rail was added after A LOT of wet sanding and polishing! I purchased a set of plastic aqua sport logos off eBay but they just didn't do it for me so i used those as a buck and had a set cast in bronze then, chrome plated i couldn't be happier with the outcome!

I am sure there is a lot i am forgetting but the boat is almost complete minus installing the stainless bimini top, all new coushions for the bow and console front, custom stainless rubrail caps, final detail and putting the boat on its brand new trailer. I will have more pictures to come this week of the finished project! Hope you guys enjoy, its great to see how many people love and enjoy their classic Aquasports!

What did you use on the teak? Also which rubrail did you use?  That is the last thing I have to do to complete my rebuild and have been thinking stainless also.

Wow....extremely impressed with your talents, especially your bright work!!  I love that everything runs through NEMA 2000....I am installing my new fuel tank and was thinking about doing the same.  I was looking at the Simrad GO5 and having everything run through it.  Seriously nice work!!!

Thank you for the kind words!! The Rubrail is a Taco part number V219959WHC50D you will need stainless insert S114511P12. The teak was finished with Interlux wood sealer which is a 2 part high build urethane. This product is very easy to apply, builds fast and dries very quickly. Once the grain is filled the teak is then blocked sanded with 400 and sprayed with awlcraft 2000 clear.

Wow....extremely impressed with your talents, especially your bright work!!  I love that everything runs through NEMA 2000....I am installing my new fuel tank and was thinking about doing the same.  I was looking at the Simrad GO5 and having everything run through it.  Seriously nice work!!!

I also looked at the Simrad units when I was in the market but there display for the engine info no where near compared to the Garmin, seeing that I have no gauges I wanted to make sure what I was using to substitute was functional and The Garmin was the best on the market hands down.

The removable teak section of the coffin cover is held in place with caulk only?
Since it's underfoot, what are your plans on treating/maintaining it?

No the teak was epoxied down with West System then the seams were caulked, you could never expect teak to stay in place with caulk only. Maintaining it is very easy, keep it clean and treated with Semco teak sealer.

I have an older outboard (1990 evinrude 88 SPL) so I wouldn't be able to use NMEA 2000 anyway, but I thought about it for stereo, fuel, etc... I also just want a chartplotter/fishfinder either way.  Im going to look into Garmin as well. Did you need to do any transom or sole repairs?

For that the go5 is a great bang for the buck you really can't beat the price. The boat was completely solid minus the coffin box cover i had to recore that. The boat was a true time capsule
