Suggestions for getting insurance on a classic Aquasport

How to lose a loyal (20+ years) customer in 4 easy steps…
By An Insurance Company.

Step 1
Inform the customer less than one week after an inspector came and took pictures of all the documents and vessel that you are cancelling the boat policy for failure to provide the documents. Then inform them over the phone that the REAL reason is because the hull identification is in the wrong place.
Step 2
Extract the fee for the policy from the customer’s account.
Step 3
When the customer provides the reason for the placement of the hull identification number in a letter written to the CEO of the company, ignore the information. Also, do not provide any alternatives.
Step 4
Notify the customer’s agent that you are dropping the policy for non-payment.

This is a true story. I left out the name of the insurance company, but if asked via private message or email, I will share.

Step 2 was a real kicker for me, I am still trying to get my money back. I am also going to file a complaint with my state's insurance commissioner.

So, has anyone had any success insuring an older vessel?

i had absolutely no problem insuring my 1991 fountain 31 with full coverage, my 1968 aquasport had no issues insuring with an survey/inspection for replacement value. it was expensive but if anything happens its worth it... i have progressive.

Yes, but apparently the underwriter for your company doesn't accept a '73 with the HIN on the left side..

That underwriter should seek a new profession, in 1973 the HIN on Aquasports were on the port side.

I know a State Farm agent who will gladly write you a policy. shoot me a PM- very competitive. (no, it's not me and I have no relations, just happy with my Insurance agent for over 20 years).

Ummm standardized HIN did not even exist until the late 72... so a 73 could have been built before the standard took effect.

My 1975 Aquasport had the HIN on the port side and I know that Skoot's 1975 also has the HIN on the port side. Although the HIN was standardized in 1973 I don't believe location of the HIN was standardized in 1973. It be interesting to hear from others with 1970s boats where their HIN is located.

My 1976 170 HIN is on the port side as well. I had no issues insuring through commerce with no inspection. Just chose an insured value.

Thought I would add the latest...

The insurance company has decided that since they covered us for a brief period they're only going to give me back ~30% of the money they took out of my account.

I couldn't possibly be more upset with them.

The truth is they knew before they took my money they weren't going to cover me. Fargin Bastages!

LAWYER TIME! Good thing i have a friend who is a lawyer.

If you haven't figured out what company it is from the posts, let me know via PM.

Again my wife and I both have been with them for over 20 years.
