200 XF Fuel Tank Replacement
« on: July 04, 2016, 06:25:00 PM »
Hello everybody - an early 80s Aquasport XF in not so decent condition has become my new best friend. I bought it cheap pretty much for the price of the almost new trailer. Motor, steering and tilt are working now, there are a lot of cosmetics to take care of, it is missing a lot of parts and .. well .. it will take some time to get it on the water again. It came without a fuel tank and I would like to put a replacement in there. I don't care too much about gallons, everything in the 30 Gal range would be ok. I am not really that good with tools, so I thought about a plastic tank. After going through all the different tanks available (like Moeller) I am as smart as I were before. They either don't fit or have the filler or pickup at the wrong position or -side. Did anybody of you install a plastic tank in a comparable boat? And if so - which ?

Thanks for your help.

Welcome aboard Michaela,
There are 2 primary suppliers of original fuel tanks still around and do great work.  Where are you located?  One of the suppliers is in the NE and the other is in the SE.

Having owned a 200XF I can tell you 30 gallons is way to small for that hull. 50 would be the minimum. She came with a 70 gallon tank originally.

I hear you. But looking at my budget and all the stuff this boat is going to need - well .. maybe I find something used.

Thanks for your suggestion.

I replaced my tank last year on my 82 200XF.  Boat came originally wit a 72 gal tank.  I went with a 40 gal. aluminum from

http://www.rdsaluminum.com/marine-stock-below.html.

Blocked it in with P.T. 2x4's and filled the remaining void with foam.  The reason i went smaller is because my boat is powered by a Suzuki DF115 four stroke. Its a fuel sipper.  Just be aware where your deck plates are in positioning the tank.  If you don't wanna do a bunch of glass work , try and position them tank accordingly.  I had to repair my coffin hatch any way so I ended up repositioning the deck plates.  In that tank theres a forward deck plate for the fill and an aft plate for the sending unit.  While you're doing it make sure you don't cheap out and reuse the existing fuel lines. Alcohol has been added to fuel since those lines have been installed.  My Fuel fill line was cracked and dried out causing years of gas seaping into the foam.  I mean i had to remove a lot of foam below the crack.

Good luck!!
