Recaulking coffin lid
« on: May 24, 2016, 07:06:39 AM »
Does anyone have a preferred product for recaulking a coffin lid? I thought 5200 might be a bit aggressive? 4200 maybe ok?

I prefer 3M 4000 UV.

It provides adhesion but mainly it seals, and wears well. It stays white also. 5200 yellows over time. You can get it in caulking tube size for application. Best thing is, it will allow you to remove the hatch to retrieve the tool you left on the tank  without tearing up the gelcoat.

Good luck. :thumright:

I second that. I just used UV 4000 for my lid and it worked great.  Easy to apply, just like toothpaste.

She's finally coming together; I caulked the coffin lid yesterday with 4000uv as per Capt. Bob.  Unfortunately I didn't fill the joint sufficiently. The joint is sealed but needs more caulk for a proper job. Question, can I run another bead on top of the 4000 or do I have to pull it out and start over? As with my other caulking jobs half went to its intended destination and half on me and other parts of the boat.

Thankee, mates.l

Tape the sides of the seam with masking tape. Butter her up and then smear it smooth with your finger. Have lots of paper shop towels. Pull the tape off quick since 4000uv skins up quick.  Also 3M adhesive cleaner is by FAR the best product to clean up with.

Masking tape...now why didn't I think of that?  Don't try to smooth out the 4000  with a latex glove on, I just found out the hard way.

lol  Just wet your finger tip with some of the 3M adhesive sealer... or even just some spit.  Don't wast your time with gloves... the stuff is going to get everywhere anyways! the trick is LOTS of shop towels

Masking tape....genius lol!!!  So simple yet probably overlooked by many.  Wingtime has been one of many awesome voices of reason throughout my build. Good luck!!
