Ought to be in a museum!!
« on: March 15, 2016, 02:20:58 PM »
Recently stumbled into a 1973 Aquasport 170 that seems to have been in a time capsule.
Seems the "only drove it to church on Sundays" stories occasionally are true!
Apparently this boat lived in a garage all its life until the older gentleman I acquired it from had bought it 3 years ago.

Warning.....boat porn to follow  :72:

If anyone has specific details they would like to see....let me know and I will try to take pics.

Truth be told, I almost feel this boat SHOULD be in the hands of a collector and not tied up at my dock. I was hunting a 17' after seeing the water in our canal get pretty skinny this winter. All that work on my 200 Striper and it has been on the trailer
 :huh02:
When I saw this gem I just fell out. The upholstery is all original. Even has the original cushions for the forward deck!
Yet that feeling of having something really nice is a double edged sword......too nice to use?
I am pretty picky about taking good care of things...so we shall see.
Hmmmm....maybe Aquasport might be interested in using it in an ad campaign! Never know.. :scrHead:

Way cool, Aaron! Guess I had been seeing ones that I was pondering rebuilding that this seemed like a rarity.
Oh well....guess that makes adding trolling motor, bottom paint, etc, etc  less of a big deal.

I do have a question for anyone familiar with the 170......
Not long ago I just got through adding a lifting eye to my 200. This 170 has a cleat that looks like a lifting eye, but simply goes through the deck. It is not tied to the bow eye. However....I can't see how Aquasport folks figured one would ever repair/replace the 170's bow eye. No access!!!! Hate to put a hole in the floor of the anchor locker.....but seems only way. Same for the stern eyes. No access! It is a light boat, but hate to not reinforce the area or even swap a stronger eye. Any thoughts/ experience?

The front lifting eye was attached on some models - see Lars' rebuild in the 170 rebuild forum.
The liner does cover access to any of the hardware.  On my rebuild I built in cabinets/doors to bring the wiring and cables up in the rear corners and also have access to the eyes and cleats.  I cut a pie plate in the anchor locker that gives me access to the front eye.

This will give you an idea of what is under the cap up front - I think it was 1/2" ply.

I think you might be able to add some 1/4" aluminum under the big nut there and trust that it'll hang ok.  I think I still have the original front cleat/lifting eye with bolt if you want to see a pic of it.
In the back you can cut in some pies to get to the lifting eyes or through-bolt the cleats and use them to lift

Hate to see you put bottom paint on the virgin hull.

That underside was revealing! Thanks. Definitely need to figure out a way to tie to bow eye.
Yep....bottom paint would hurt my feelings as well.....but if it stays in the water for any time it will be stained...not to mention having critters growing! The davits would be nice......part of the reason I was looking for looking a smaller, lighter boat.

My 1987 170 has the lifting eye.  My front cleat is the same as yours and it is connected to my bow eye with a large threaded rod.  I can take pics but my 170 may be built differently than yours.

I responded to your other thread about this boat, but figured I would add it here.  Accon Marine makes the hardware to add a lifting eye to your boat.  They are known for pop-up type hardware (which is expensive), but you may be able to re-use your cleat and just add the connecting hardware to your bow eye.  Here is a link:

Very nice boat, btw!
