1974 19'6 mullet build

First off I feel like I'm in way over my head! What started as some simple rebuild work turned into what feels like a full rebuild to me since I have never worked on a boat in my life lol. Wanting to have a bow mounted console. Also wanting to lay up some new glass in the hull to make sure she is very sturdy and can hold some weight! Here is what I am working with so far after cutting into it. The previous owner rebuilt it but it wasn't quite how is like it to be. Wanting to have a bow mounted console and all open in the back. After cutting into it I found that it has a marine ply deck but is only laminated on the top but has screws going all he way through allowing for moisture to enter from the inside. Was going to leave be existing wood to allow for a higher deck and prevent from having to build up but I'm really tempted to just pull it all up and start over. 

One question for you all, is the liner connected to the hull cap or does it separate if I just unscrew all the bolts holding the rub rail on? Thinking about just cutting the lining off the cap if it is connected.

Well I am having trouble uploading new pics but for now I'll just explain progress.

So far I drilled holes in the bottom of the stringers to find the foam soaked so I went ahead and cut the tops off and cleaned them out. While I was doing that I decided to remove the bulkhead that was built into the stringers as t was cracked and weak and had already been repaired once it looked like. Now I started to grind down the glass to make a smooth surface to glass to for now.

I feel like I am almost grinding to deep though, into the woven but trying to grind away the little pits within the woven where the pits are empty of resin. Is that right? Just feels super thin like if I step on it I'm going to fall through

Looks like you did it twice (above) - are you trying to upload more than 3 pics? Sometimes I see a problem doing that.  Try 3 pics.

As for the grinding, I'm not sure where you are grinding.  The stringers are part of a "system" that was laid and glassed into the boat once the hull was laminated.  If you are grinding on the portions between the stringers, usually that needs to be ground down flush but you shouldn't feel a soft spot where you're grinding.    You could shine a strong flashlight from below the hull at the spot you ground and see what it looks like.  These hulls are 1/2" to 3/4" thick on the bottom depending on where you measure.

Trying to but it keeps saying file is to large which is weird because they are the same as before.

Hmm definitely don't seem to be anywhere near 1/2 inch where I'm at. I'll find a way to get the pics to work but for now I am grinding let's say a foot in front of the transom both port/starboard of the keel. Definitely feels flimsy but like you said it could be because there is no real system to support the glass really. Going to remove the stringers and glass the entire hull with 2 layers of 1708.

I see that you are using photo bucket, which is fine. The size for images from an external hosting site is limited to 1100x1100.  Make sure that you have your photo bucket acct set to1024x768 (I think this is the default there). 800x600 would be better.

Also when I was grinding I found what looked like a previous repair where someone just laid in a bunch of resin so I ground it back to give it some smoother edges and laid in 2 layers of 1oz mat with one layer of 1808.

Well after much debating between cradles and blocks I decided to put the boat up on some styrofoam blocks to finish the rebuild. Weather permitting I will remove the stringers and liner on Friday so I can prep for the 2 layers of 1708!

Didn't get as much done as I'd hoped today but progress is progress I guess, I got the stringers removed and did as much grinding as I could to get the rest of the glass layers smoothed. I know one thing for sure the suits I am wearing are just as worthless as they could be. Might as well grind naked if the suits work like they have been -_-

Hopefully I can get the liner out before to long so I can get the actual build starte!

Haha yea it's pretty horrible, I've been wearing 3m hoodies but the damn things rip at the pelvic area lol. Just picked up some tyvec suits tonight though so hopefully they'll be better.

I usually have a fan but didn't have it today unfortunately! I'll have that thing in there for sure tomorrow, I'll have to try that second one though.
