Flatback definitive answer
« on: December 23, 2015, 06:02:48 PM »
Hey gang. I'm fairly new to the classic aquasport community. I have a '76 170. I continue to come across the descriptive word "Flatback". Sometimes it's used, sometimes not. I understand what the term describes, but I'm confused if this is a custom build or factory. For instance, I saw a craigslist ad for a '72 170 flatback. The picture of the bottom stern looked just like mine, yet mine is not a flatback. Can someone please take a few minutes to explain Flatback, or steer me to a website with such information. Many thanks!

Many people incorrectly use the term "flatback".  Perhaps they think that if the transom is flat (not notched like a 240), then it is a flatback.  In reality, the flatback is the 22-2 model from about 1966 to 1971 or so.

Craig and I were typing at the same time.... a lot of people just don't know what they have.
A "Flatback" is the beloved name bestowed the 66-71 "22-2" center console - it has little deadrise and is virtually flat across the back - here is a pic of the aft end of one

Aquasport dabbled a bit in different hull designs early in the game and made a special hull for the 19-1 but it was not flat, just different.  The 22-2 was the only "flatback" made by Aquasport.

After '70 they were into 12 degree deadrise hulls. Your '76 and my 70/71 is a 12 degree.
