In-gunnel rod holders for 1976 170
« on: December 10, 2015, 08:38:06 PM »
Suggestions on where I can find replacement in-gunnel rod holders?  Finding the original teak ones would be a gem, but I'll settle for a starboard version.  I found something similar online (see weblink below), though I'm not sure it will fit.  The inset gunnels vary in depth as you move from bow to stern.

You could make a template and make some replacements - you won't find originals unless someone is throwing theirs out.  IMO the originals were pretty useless - one wave or good bump and one end of the rods are on the floor. Plus I was always kicking the reels as I walked by the console.
This is what I am going back in with on my rebuild - made by Attwood

Good point Rick..without bungees I recon the rods would shake loose.  Did you check out the link in my post?  I'm wondering if those would fit.  Worst case if I bought those and they were too big is I could contour to fit.  I believe they're made of starboard.  Appreciate the reply and advice.

I did and they should work and if they don't it's not going to kill you for the price.  Check out how yours are fastened to the liner or floor first before you buy.

Agreed, it's a fair price. My gunnels have no fasteners. Smooth liner and floor surface. The original teak wood still lines the bottom of the inset gunnel.  Which ever rod rack system i choose how do you recommend mounting?  I see in your pic the gunnel liner is removed, which makes for an easy install. But id like to avoid that hassle if possible.

Mine are quite different than yours - they side into the liner and are through-bolted to the liner.  My original rodholders were installed before the insert was installed and they were screwed from top and bottom through the insert. You can see the screw coming up though the insert in this pic.

The back side of your rod area is a sheet of gelcoated fiberglass spot glassed to the hullside to cover the raw glass and I think your rod holders are screwed to that and maybe the wood on the bottom?  You'll have to look real close to see.
