Bunks vs rollers
« on: October 09, 2015, 03:40:59 PM »
Hello, I have really enjoyed going threw all the information you have posted. I recently purchased my first aquasport, a 88, 22'2.  Every where I been on the boat or with the boat someone feels the need to give me there 2 cents about what to do for an engine when I repower to the best way to fix cracks in the gelcoat.  But several people have suggested that I replace the rollers on the trailer with bunks if I keep it stored that way.  Is this better for hull?

Well, I might as well join the crowd and give you my  :2Cents:

Roller trailers are great if you have some really huge tide swings or really tough ramps and may have to drag your boat up a hill and onto the trailer - other than that they are bad for your hull.  The weight is not distributed very well on the roller wheels and you can get spider cracks on the outside and even delamination of stringers on the inside.
Down here we have a nice gentle 2 foot swing of tide and most ramps don't require having a roller trailer.

Bunks are the way to go.  There is a topic on here where one of our members was nice enough to post his conversion front rollers to bunks.  Here is a link to the conversion:

+ 1 for bunks. Properly set up they are better for the hull and WAY less expensive & not a PITA to maintain.

Can I give you my 2.5 cents ?  Both trailers are good. If you are trailer long distance I go with the roller because bunk trailer ride close to the road and may pick up something off the road and chip the gel coat this what happen to me and you can't raise the bunks,,  on the other hand roller you can raise them up at a point where your boat is up more to prevent this kind of issues. Just my 2.5 cents Mr. Chesapeake "The home of Maryland Blue crabs and Striper"
