Garmin SideVu Sonar on an Explorer?
«

Has anyone installed a Garmin transducer with SideVu on an Explorer hull?
I am looking at an Explorer 250 with twins and will update the electronics if I buy it. The SideVu sensor needs lots of clearance, so the best place to mount it would probably be on the center of the transom between the outboards. Is there a lot of turbulence there? I will check that during the sea trial on Tuesday.
Thanks in advance.

No experience with side vu from any manufacturer yet, but I am under the impression that side vu only works at slower speeds. I may be totally wrong (wouldn't be the first time), but if so, turbulence may not be a big issue.

Thanks, Craig
I should have mentioned that SideVu, DownVu and conventional sonar are all done with a single transducer. So my concern is losing the bottom at speed with the conventional sonar.

I looked back to when you registered and see that it is a 2000 model so you have the Euro transom and it has the trim tab pockets on both sides. The pockets give you less room to mount a 'ducer. Also look under the hull and see where the raw water pickups are. I don't know if there is one or more of them on the bottom of the hull. My 230 explorer has one on the Starboard side.
Good luck on the purchase - the explorer is a great hull.

I found a thread about this. Not sure if it's OK to post links here. They suggested mounting to the vertical edge of the step near the drain plug.

here is the same year hull with older garmin 'ducer... as long as there is enough height for the bracket to mount, as close to center you can get it the better

Thanks, Aswaff. Your explanation on that thread was exactly what I was looking for.

I am looking at the GT50M-TM. Guesstimating the height from the drawings in the manual, I think it will fit. That beast is 9" long, so it will act like a bonus trim tab.

I just installed a Garmin EchoMap Chirp 74dv on my 1999 Explorer 225. So far this is working nice and I have not had any issues with it.
