New fuel tank so coat it or not????
« on: August 10, 2015, 05:49:36 PM »
Just got my new fuel tank from Alloy metal works today. So my question is should I paint it or coat it with anything before I install it?? It is aluminum FYI.

First, I'll move this topic to the "fuel tank" forum.

Second, from a metallurgy point of view, aluminum develops a pretty corrosion resistant coating when exposed to air. Keep this in mind as you will need to remove it in order to get a good bond between the tank and the product you choose to use.

Lastly, tomorrow I'll dig up some threads with the different coatings other members have used. Myself, I chose to leave the tank natural. I rely on the oxide barrier mentioned earlier and keeping the tank compartment as dry as possible. Check the tank forum for several different styles of installation.

Good luck. :thumright:

it really depends on how you will install it.  If you are going to fill foam around it, then I would recommend a coal tar epoxy or similar epoxy coating.  If it will be open all around (air circulating around) then the aluminum should not need anything.  AL develops a thin layer of oxidation that will protect the metal.

Persoally I prefer the epoxy coating and foam option in a sealed off compartment, but there are other ways to do it that will work.  The only "wrong" way is to foam in an aluminum tank without epoxy, moister between the foam and the tanks will eventually cause pitting
