1999 Aquasport 175 Fuel Leak?
« on: July 27, 2015, 01:26:41 PM »
Hi! I wanted to introduce myself to the group.  New owner of a 1999 Aquasport 175.  Noticing a  strong smell of gas when I open the hatch above the fuel tank.... Praying there isn't leak!  Any insight on how to troubleshoot this issue would be great!

THANKS!

Hi Gumby,
Does your model have a big cover over the tank area or just a pie plate access hole?

Here is a link to a catalog page in a '98 catalog:

This sales book page ('99) shows an cover but it's just a drawing:

It is the pie plate access.

Is there a line in the floor that makes it look like there is a hatch around the tank area?
If so, that is where you would cut to gain access to the tank.

Do I have to cut it open to determine if there is a leak?

Is the tank aluminum?

I believe it's a poly tank

Here is one possible source for the smell.

Poly tanks don't corrode but they can crack. I would rule out any loose hose connections and a good seal on the sending unit first. Let me see what other threads I can find.

This pic shows possible hose chafing.

Different model but the mounting strap compromised the tank.

These and other threads in the "Fuel" forum may give you some ideas at where to look before you have to cut (if at all).

Good luck. :thumright:

I had a fuel leak from the poly tank in my Osprey.  It 'only' leaked when the tank was relatively full (3/4 or more).  It turned out that the fuel level sender wasn't seated properly.  The fuel sloshed around underway and came out the top of the tank around the fuel level sender flange.  I was thankful it was not a cracked tank.  I found it by inspecting that area and found the top of the tank wet with fuel, but the hoses were not wet.  Good luck.
