1987 Osprey rebuild Planning Questions????
« on: June 19, 2015, 08:30:15 AM »
This is just the beginning.

I am planning on rebuilding my "2nd wife" as my 1st wife calls it soon. Right now I have a bone stock 1987 222 Osprey that has been in the family since the day it rolled out of the dealership and was in in/out storage from day one until about a year ago when we finally were able to move in a house on the water. Now that we really use the boat a lot I am going to undertake the "full rebuild" this winter.

Before I start though I am writing out all the mods and upgrades and things that i intend to do so I have everything purchased and here before we start. This is where all the answers and information and directions the I can get from y'all will be extremely helpful. So far I am in the process of purchasing this:

I am planning on new fuel tank, deck, close in transom, add bait well, new console with tower(see pic), stringer and foam check and replace if needed, add anchor locker, cast net hatch, fish boxes in floor in rear, enclosed fly rod storage on side gunnels, fresh water tank, salt water wash down, all new wiring, bracket and new motor, new paint and non skid, power pole and trolling tabs. Im sure i missed something.

My next purchase and the biggest question right now is which bracket? Is there a downside to the armstrong full platform bracket with a jack plate as opposed to the porta bracket with a swim platform on the one side and the power pole on the other. I have never been on a boat with a porta bracket so any info from those of you in the know would be helpful!!

Sorry in advance for all the questions that will be coming your way in the near future.

That's how you took it - phone up and down, not sideways like a camera.  If you upload the pic(s) to your member gallery here on the site I can fix it for you. Follow the instructions at the top of each forum on how to post pix.

That was quick!!  :thumright:
I rotated the pix that were in your gallery for you. The boat seems to be in good shape.  Are you sure you need to tear it apart?

The hardest part it seems is getting people to read the instructions on getting the pix into their gallery.  Everyone lately wants to attach them.
Once they are in your gallery the rest is easy and you have editing tools there also.

my concern is the fuel tank. It does not leak but is 28 yrs old. I was planning on removing the deck replacing the tank and adding some hatches. Also I will need to reinforce the deck with supports for the new tower attachment points plus tie in the transom. Thoughts?

If you're going to do all that, then the best way it to take the floor out or if you can figure out a way to pop the liner out you'll have it to put back in.
Since popping the liner out is a far fetched idea (we did have a member do that though) you're probably going to have to cut the floor out and take the transom core out, build up the height of the transom, inspect the stringers, modify them for the tower, build etc, so it's a major undertaking - a total rebuild.  Join the rebuild crowd.
By the way, Power pole has brackets that allow you to mount the pole to jackplates, brackets, porta lifts, even brackets that fit between the transom and the engine/jackplate/lift/bracket so you don't have to drill holes in your transom. I think I will be buying one of the brackets too.

so is that a vote for the full transom bracket? That is the direction that I am leaning also mostly because I am familiar with them and have never had a porta bracket. We do a fair amount of bluewater skin diving and spearfishing so it may be beneficial

You just stepped out of my experience level.  I have a Powerpole on my 170 but don't have a bracket on either of my boats.  I am putting a jackplate on my 170 when I hang the motor.
It is all about how you're going to use the boat and there is no right or wrong answer - if you want a full transom bracket, that is perfectly fine. Just remember that depending on how much setback there is, you'll change the center of gravity and will have to compensate for it somewhere else. This has to do with a Porta or a bracket (or a jackplate).
Someone else with experience on this will be around to help soon.

I had a 1965 Bertram rebuild with a fixed bracket was great for the deep V style boat.

Like you I never ran a or was on a boat with a porta bracket till mine was done but a lot of people are running them. I went with the porta bracket on my 1988 222 and love it!! Was well worth the money. I was like you and thought about doing another fixed bracket due to helping the back float a little more and keep deck dry. If you raise the floor and do porta bracket you wont regret it can run the boat in some shallow water and keep your motor performing at its best.

Thanks a Lot jmr1!! Love the way your boat looks. Who did you get your console/tower from? Also how much did you raise the floor? did you cut out the old one and lay the new one on the lip or did you go higher? Did you figure out how to do an overboard drain or does it drain to the bilge?

LOL I have lots of questions!! Just want to have it all laid out before i begin

Ditto I'm curious as to how much you raised your floor also. I'm going to be running the same set up as you 150 yam on a porta, without the tower.

I got the console from rabco boat in Pinellas park fl. I cut floor out and raised stringers 4.5". I have a deck drain that goes out of the boat. I have a thread on here "1988 222 rebuild" has a lot of that info on there
