Difference in consoles
« on: May 31, 2015, 04:59:46 PM »
Why are there different consoles on the 170?
some have just the indent and other have the indent with an Angled piece that has a spot for gauges.
any info about this?

Depends on the year I guess.  The earliest ones didn't have the "trough" where you could store your radio, keys or billfold, etc (no cellphones back in those days). Mine didn't have a seat in the front either. Then in 73 or so they added the trough - you can see it here in this ad sheet http://www.classicaquasport.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=2716&title=as-170-sales-sheet1-1975&cat=552
Looks like around '80 they raised the top portion of the console for gauges but the trough is gone? http://www.classicaquasport.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=2846&title=as-all-models-brochure8-1980&cat=572

Then in '86 the trough is back (maybe it was still there in '80 but couldn't tell in pic)

I was just about to start a similar thread .. I am trying to determine if a windshield from a 70 or 71 would fit my 72 .. Upd plastics list 70 and 71 but no 72.. :41:  .. My dad has a 71 and his console is identical to mine minus the seat in front of console ..

My dads 71

And here is my 72

I measured them as well and like i thought they are the same exact console mine just has the seat/ storage area added to the front .. I dont get why UPD does not offer a windshield for 72 since they offer a 70 and 71 ...Only thing i could think of is perhaps 72 was a breaking point where they started offering the different console with the "trough" towards  the end of the production year so a 72 could have either console ? Just a guess ... but I suppose if that is the case UPD might not want the headache of offering a "72" windshield ... either way I think i answered my own question hahhah a 71 shield should fit my 72  :13:      Thanks Rick

I see that his rod storage was different than mine also - you can see mine in the pic above behind the console.

At least it lets me know that I have an original console, wasn't sure because no one else had one like it

Here is what it looks like today after a few mods

That must of been a lot of work but it looks great! ..I love the little seat in front of console ..I keep my batteries in there and it makes for a much cleaner deck / fishing space
