I need a next step to address "leaking" tank in 1975 17'
« on: May 22, 2015, 12:26:34 PM »
I just purchased a 1975 170. The previous owner said while out on an early trip he smelled fuel. When he got the boat home and drained it, via the drain plug, fuel was mixed with water. It how has a tank under the console. I would like to go back to the on board tank. What are my next steps to assess the issue and how to fix it. I will not be replacing this myself. (I am in Jacksonville)

CM,
Like the trailer, please post a pic or two of the deck and the under console tank.
Also, does the deck itself feel spongy/soft in areas?

Thanks.

Bob, The deck is pretty good the softest part is on the starboard side of the stern behind the seat. The deck between the seat and console is solid. Here are some shots.

The console can be repaired.  What I never liked about the early consoles is they left them wide open and here in FL that is a perfect invite to wasps and mud daubers to start a new home.  You'll need to design some way to close the big openings when you finish.
Looks like it's time to pull the old tank from under the sole and check it out - more than like it's toast and time to replace it.  RDS is an original supplier of fuel tanks to Aquasport and is in FL. The hope is that the fill and vent hoses are still ok otherwise that will be the biggest challenge to replace. There are quite a few topics and examples of replacing those hoses and the best way to do it, here in this forum.

Any shops around Jacksonville that can check the hoses and then replace the fuel tank?
