Help Me Identify This Aquasport
« on: May 19, 2015, 09:39:15 AM »
First time poster here. I've been boat searching for a little while now, found a couple boats I really liked that sold before I could move.. I found one with potential... I think it's priced a bit high, but the boat is pretty much my ideal setup right now. Closed transom, solid motor, not too big and not too small. Love the T Top.

My question to you AquaSport experts, what model is this? The owner isn't sure. Says it's a 21' 1974.

Is this a Osprey 200? Can you get a ballpark idea from these pics? I know all the usual things to look for in older boats, so I'm all set there. I just don't have much experience with these Aquasports, but what I've been reading is causing me to fall for them. Is this a solid, all around hull. I'm looking for great bay fishing boat that I can take off shore on nice, calm, days. Can fish two comfortably, three every now and then. Use for tubing occasionally. The main thing, I want a good safe boat so if I get stuck out in crappy weather, it will get me home safely (I can deal with pounding and spray).

Thanks Capt. Bob! It looks like a 19'6, which is what I was really hoping for. Another question, check out this video and take a look at how the transom was closed off. Does that throw up red flags? Owner says when he purchased he spoke with the mechanic who did the work, and it was done well and there should be no concerns, but it looks odd to me. I was expecting to see the transom re-glassed and closed off. Honestly I'm not worried about looks, I can make it look nice, I just want it safe. It might be fine, I have just never seen a transom closed off like that.

Owner says it's solid as a rock, absolutely no flexing. Should that transom work be a sign to run?!

I can't tell one from the other length wise but it sure looks shorter than the 22-2.
I'll look at the video and compare.

Yes and no.
Yes in the fact that when re-builders close in the transom, they are replacing it at the same time. In this case, the transom is factory and the "framed in" enclosure is just that. Assuming the transom is good on this old of a hull ( :ScrChin:) the enclosure is strictly form rather than function. The mounting plate is obviously for the bracket. We rarely see this setup on the smaller hulls but rather jack plate style motor attachments on enclosures. So, my concerns would lie with the original transom itself. A simple "tap test" will tell volumes on its condition followed by a flex test.

I wouldn't believe Jesus himself when it comes to the condition of a 40 something year old hull. You need to see and inspect it yourself. As for running, this to me is a rebuild but you may get some quality use out of it first. Also check the deck especially around the t top mounts. Fuel tank?? Type/age. Probably needs to be replaced.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Lol that made me laugh. Yeah, I don't put any stock into what he says. I'm definitely going to jump around on the boat and check everything. I've just never saw a notched transom with a bracket so that was a bit of a shock.. Thanks for the advice, it really helps out. He's going to have to come down in price quite a bit for me to move forward anyway.
