Transom bottom question?
« on: April 26, 2015, 01:33:11 PM »
OK. Picked up the 222 CCP from Harkers Island Friday, towed it home( trailer was very questionable to make it), got it thru a car wash and then started to really look it over to see the actual base of the boat for a rebuild, floor is completely shot, transom is going to be replaced(picked up a bracket on the way down), the biggest downside I have found so far is on the bottom of the hull under the drain the boat was either dragged or fell and it has a 4 inch crack/split. ? is can it be structurally repaired to be usable or find another hull. The trailer looks to have had the rear cross member break off the rails(corrosion) and that's what probably did the damage, the rails have had a "repair" done to them. I can post a couple of pics of the damage after I get back home on 5/1. Trailer will be scrapped after removing any usable parts.

Hi Gman,
Is the crack all the way through or a little.  I think that there is a way to fix just about anything made from fiberglass (my $.02).  I think that this is a job for epoxy though for sure (structural) and once you grind and tie everything together it'll be better than new.
We'll have to wait to see the pics though.

I had a similar thing happen on the keel of my 170 and it was all the way through.  It was like they always beached the boat on an oyster bed or something  I ground it out, built it back up and you'd never know anything was repaired.  I did it in poly though probably 6 years ago.  Now I have a couple layers of epoxy and cloth on the entire inside so if there was any doubt before, it's gone now.  Had I knew what I know now I would have used epoxy for the repair.

It's not cracked all the way thru, but enough so that water in the hull runs out of it before it goes out the drain hole. I'm
out of town for work till Thurs night .will post pics on 5/1.. Thanks Rick, just adding things up to see if it's a worth while project or cut any losses early.

You may have to grind out a lot of damaged glass in that area before you can repair it.  Regardless, the percentage of damaged area to length of bottom is small. I would glass it from the inside and out in that area for sure.  We'll wait for the pix though.
