222 hull with 135hp?
« on: April 11, 2015, 12:22:49 PM »
I am looking at a 222 with transom bracket that is powered with a 135. Where could I start my research to find out if 135 is underpowered for the hull?and what info do we have here regarding things like his? I have seen people with 150's on he 222's so I would think a 135 would be ok, I know not ideal. Thanks!!!

Are you talking about a Flatback?
I've drove a FB with a 90 hp on it and while not a rocket, ran fine, the way they were designed to be run.
Seems most members go 150-175hp as the norm and some have gone as high as 225hp, which they admit is way too much power.  The boat gets squirrely on them above 40.

If you're talking about a 12degree Osprey, then 135 is probably too little.
You can look in our Gallery for spec sheets on HP ratings.

I'll second what Rick said.  I also had a 222 flatback with a 90 HP that topped out in the 30s.  It cruised in the low 20's which is usually about all you want anyway depending on conditions.  If it's a 12' you'd probably be happier with a 150 but that depends on how fast you want to go.

Hey guys thanks! Yes it is a 12 degree 222 that is coming with a 135 mercury on a transom bracket. Would the bottom line be as long as it gets on plane with normal family weight it would be ok for now? I could always use this as a bargain chip too with the purchase. I am told the entire boat was restored, but I now will not take someone's word agin in that regard since after last weekend. Going to our gallery to find rating info!
