Bronze Thru Hulls
« on: April 07, 2015, 02:06:30 PM »
I will be keeping my boat (200CCP) in a slip this year and I was wondering if need to do anything special to the bronze thru hulls for the scuppers.  As most of you know the thru hulls are under water on this boat.  Do they need to grounded or tied into something with an anode?  Can I bottom paint right over them to prevent marine growth?
Thanks, Sean

I'm assuming you are referring to the deck drainage which exits just above (when new) the waterline in the rear section of the hull.

On my 84, they were plastic. I kept my hull in the water for a year but they were out (except maybe when the boat rocked while moored).

This is the first time I recall anyone asking about bonding them. The seacock (raw water pickup) yes but not the thu hulls.

Glancing at several CCPs it appears those with bottom paint did cover them so you should be fine on that point.

This should be interesting.

Capt. Bob, I replaced them with heavy duty bronze ones when one of the original plastic fittings cracked. I should have said the fittings are partly submerged from the wet wood and foam. I know the raw water pick up / seacock gets bonded, that's why I asked about the drain fitting.

Well when you want the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth you go to The Hull Truth

Here's an interesting read to get you thinking.

Yet another.

Yet another thought on bonding.

Good luck and if you do decide to bond, a photo or two would be greatly appreciated. I'm thinking this will come up again someday.

Thanks and good luck. :thumright:

i installed an 1 1/4 '' in my osprey last night. ordered it online and made the flanging tool from something i saw on the hull truth. 3/4 bolt and some washers... i could not find a rounded nylock nut to start the flanging. i ended up doing it with a hammer and something found in the garage. then i put the bolt in and tightened with washers. Came out pretty good for my first time. also put some 5200 in there to seal it
