1996 200 Osprey at Used Car Dealer
« on: December 30, 2014, 08:12:46 AM »
Guess the stories of used car dealers apply to cars AND boats.  I looked at this boat several months ago and it is far from "like new" condition unless they've done some repairs.

Looks like it is on a nice trailer. That place is not far from where I live.

All of those issues are mostly cosmetic and are easy to repair as long as the deck and transom are solid.

The deck has at least 1 soft area and the trailer has been in a wreck.  Someone was telling me that if there is pitting in the aluminum trim on the transom, then there is likely pitting going in inside the engine.

Yes and no.  The aluminum trim is just that...  probably anodized 6061 extrusion.  6061 is not a marine grade alloy.  Also it is hard to tell but that corrosion looks like intergranular corrosion.  That is corrosion caused by imperfections in the alloy of the part and it corrodes from the inside out.  One way to check the motor is to simply pull one of the thermostats and look inside.  The motor bracket and lower unit looks like the typical OMC peeling/ worn  paint.  Two cans of OMC white and some elbow grease and the motor would look like new.  The windshield can be replaced for maybe $200.  The trailer can be easily repaired with some aluminum angle and a few bolts.  It's behind the springs so it not really a structural part of the trailer.  With some cleaning and a few minor repairs that boat is MUCH easier to fix up than any of the boats you posted so far.  I'd go down and do a compression check and check the motor for corrosion.  If that checks out make him and offer...  in CASH.  $3200 is what I would hand him....  he wont hand it back  trust me.

Welcome back Kash (Oldschool - Member 13!!). Hated to see your inboard sold and then changed to an outboard - oh well, stuff happens.

Ever hear back from the buyer?

Good to see you back in the Aquasport family.

One more for old time's sake.

You'll find the Gallery is much more "user friendly" then it was in the past. Start a thread on your "new Osprey" and again, welcome back.

Good luck. :thumright:

thanks guys, been doing some work on the boat trailer and its getting better. Cold compression on the engine is 100 even all 4. lower unit gear oil is dark and good.

question on this boat the 1996 200 in the bilge does the seacock close towards the rear or forward of the boat, its tight and I don't want to put too much pressure on it.

none of my gauges work, is there a place or someone in tampa area that knows wiring I can take it too.

Here's where a photo is worth a thousand words. Since we  don't know what you have (though I'm guessing it's the second pic), here are two style handles.

Typical "hose bib" type:
http://www.classicaquasport.com/gallery/data/500/68230_bilge1.JPG

Hose bib is simple, "righty tighty" /"lefty loosey"

Lever type:

The lever type direction can be determined by looking closely at the "stop" on the valve located at the connection point of the handle. In the photo of the lever, the closed position is with the handle pointed toward the bow (or forward). It is pictured in the open position. Direction is be either forward or back (or port or starboard) based on the final mounting position.

There are some that have a removable stop that allows change of direction but the one shown has a cast stop in the valve body.

Good luck.
