Motor-Trailer Upgrade Advice Needed
« on: December 21, 2014, 01:46:18 PM »
Let me start by saying that this topic coincides with an ongoing rebuild, "1974 19-6 Restoration" in the Osprey Style Hull Rebuilds / 196 Rebuilds. The 196 I am rebuilding came with a trailer, (rusted out), and motor, (1983 Mercury BlackMax 150) that aren't worth spending money on. A friend of mine has a 1992 Sunbird 20 on a Cox Super Loader trailer for sale. The boat has sat for 3-4 years and the deck is beyond soft......However, the motor, a 1993 Evenrude OceanPro 140 ran perfectly when parked and the trailer appears to be in really good condition. I don't know anything about a Sunbird but it seems a shame to let this boat sit. I've got enough on my plate with the Aquasport so I'm looking at it strictly as a parts boat. Is it worth $1000. Even though I really wanted a bunk trailer this one looks nice.....What reputation does the OceanPro have?.What would the trailer alone be worth?  Here are some pictures.

Worth a $1000, maybe. Could you get it for less? Trailer worth maybe 500 as it sits, figure that if it sat as long as the boat has it will need tires and probably a brake up grade..converting it to bunks won't be that hard to do. Motor( Ocean Pro not a bad motor, does it use pre-mix or is it oil injected) if it runs and has good compression worth maybe 1000-1200, but if it's been sitting as well your looking at carb rebuilds and water pump and lower case fluid at a minimum. So take some away for that as well.. You can part out the hull, sell the console for a couple of hundred maybe, if they are asking  $1000, see if $600 would make them turn it loose.

I can't tell but was this basically a "fresh water craft"? That would help in your favor. You could also leave it as a roller type but the overall lean is to the bunk style. The springs may also need replacing.

Can you use anything else on your rebuild (gauges, rod holders, seats,)? That would help also.

Is there a prop with the motor?

New sneakers will be $400ish with valve stems delivered from tirerack.com plus mounting to start you off..  With that roller assembly bunks will not be impossible, but you will have to get creative with brackets for the forward section.  What does the bogie wheel set up aft look like?

What kind of shape is the surge brake master cylinder in?

The Neptune Sunbird was a Hydrasports brand back in the day. Entry level, but believe it or not, a really nice riding hull. Had a 202 Neptune DC with a 150 Ocean Runner...never gave a minute's trouble. Light...ran in the mid forties with a raker prop.

If you can pick up the whole mess for 1K or under.....you're golden on the $$.

Actually, Scotty, Neptune was Sunbird's line of fishboats before OMC picked up Sunbird.  Then several of the Neptune models became part of H-S's "Seahorse" line.  The old plant on Shop Rd. in Columbia, which I now believe is being inhabited by Sea Hunt...

Sounds like they were all joined at the hip.

Sea Hunt huh?  Sticking with production there. That's all we see up here for the average Joe. Sea Hunt.

I can tell you for a fact that keeping that trailer maintained, especially if you stick it in saltwater is going to cost you a small fortune with all those rollers, clips, cradles, brackets, u-bolts. etc. Roller trailers are just horribly expensive to maintain. I just did a conversion on one a few weeks ago to change it to a bunk trailer, and it was a pain. As mentioned, the roller brackets sometimes move (like the one in the front), and makes it difficult to convert. Even then, you are probably talking a few hundred to get all the pieces to do it correctly.

As for the Ocean Pro, as also mentioned, because it sat, mininmum of carbs, lube, and waterpump.
I literally just did this a few weeks ago on a 200... so you are talking about 300ish for the parts.

If the oil injection is still hooked up, make sure it meters correctly. (there is a special process to use with a small clear tube to check it). If it doesn't, then you are looking at either:
A: 500 for pump, 200 new tank assembly one or both, (700 total) or
B: disconnect it and run pre-mix. (I will NOT get into that discussion ;) ) that choice is yours. I know for me, the 700 bucks was a big issue, so I just disconnected mine.

As to your questions:
(Strictly in my opinion, and based on local values)
Trailer value 400.00 max!
Boat value 0.00
Motor value as it sits 500-600.

is 1000.00 fair? Probably, but if I were buying it, I would offer 500 cash to "haul it away" and go from there.

/edit the more I study the pictures, I do not even think that that frame will convert to a bunk style.. that boat sits up really high, and the frame doesn't have the traditional V or U shaped deeps in the center. Converting will be a total pain.

I would fully expect the engine to grenade if you get it running. Oil injected engines that sit in this condition usually don't last long. Typically these engines are at 80-100-1 oiling at idle so the level of protection against internal rust for the crank, wrist pins and rod bearings is minimal, not to mention the rings and cylinder walls. The only way to know for sure is to tear it down before you ever turn the key over. I see landfill for the hull and trailer and resale of the trim system, gearcase and maybe the block. You have to put tires on it just get it out of the yard! Free is the price I'd pay and flip the engine parts on Craigs or Ebay.

I went ahead with the purchase of the boat/trailer for 500......I can use the gauges and other miscellaneous parts and I pulled the helms seats out and sold them on CL for $150. There was also a Hummingbird Fish-Depth Finder, marine radio, nice compass, 3 cast nets, 4 life jackets, and 2 anchors.  :08: I also pulled a 64 gallon aluminum tank out.....There are no external signs of corrosion or damage.....Not sure what the market is for used fuel tanks.....could be scrap value. I'm going to start a thread in the trailer forum as well as an engine thread....
Thanks for the input.....

You are correct Bob - Sea Hunt is there now.   :nSalute:  Kicking boats out the gate every day.  I drive by there fairly often.  There's also a pontoon boat manufacturer right across the Interstate from Sea Hunt there in Columbia.
