Morse Controls on Upper Station (tower boat) Question
« on: November 09, 2014, 07:23:26 PM »
As I muddle through my rebuild project, I have been keeping an eye out for deals on parts and equipment I will eventually need when it comes time to rig it.  I already have my half tower and upper console.  I will probably go with morse single action (dual handle) controls.  From what I gather from the web, the shift & throttle cables exit the controls straight downward.  The fixed part of the controls extends around 6" - 7" below the upper surface of the console.  The vertical clearance inside the upper console is maybe 10" - 11".  That does not leave a lot of space to route the cables.  How do you guys that have morse controls on your upper consoles handle this?  Better yet, any pictures?

Craig, with Morse Type "S" controls (one lever, one function), you want to have your rigging ports coming out of the upper control station directly beneath the binnacles...basically a straight shot downwards.

I've done a ton of dual station Morse control boats, that's the way to go...

Hey Craig, I have the same setup (and tower as you); the morse controls physically fit- just make sure when you mount them- you try to have them mounted directly above the "rigging tubes" to prevent any binding. I can take a picture this week.

Also on the hydraulic helm, see about getting 45', 90', and maybe a 15 or 25' fitting to come off the bottom of the helm so you don't get any kinks in the hoses.

Hmmm, I hope that is possible.  My rigging tubes are located toward the forward portion of my upper control station.  At least the clearance is greater towards the front....

Funny Chris, I was just comparing the pictures of your tower to mine.  Your rigging tubes seem to be more towards the rear, while mine are more towards the front.  If you can get a picture of the inside of your control station, I would really appreciate it.  And thanks for the tips on the hoses :salut: !

Craig, if that's the deal, then make sure you use either Morse 33C Supreme (red jacket) or Teleflex XTreme cables.  They can take a bend radius of 4".

No offense, but someone should have thought about that upper box and the rigging ports.  Unless it was planned for a FBW binnacle, ALL controls want the cables exiting out the box directly below the binnacle...

Well, I know I wasn't thinking that far ahead.  Randy may have thought about it...my upper control box is not currently mounted on the tower, so I'm basing my assessment on the pictures I have in my rebuild thread.  Who knows, Randy may have laid it out perfectly and the perspective from the photos just makes it look more challenging than it really is.  I do have a little wiggle room to move the box a little more forward if need be - I'll just have to fix a few holes.  And I do plan to use the Xtreme cables based on your previous recommendation, since some of the bends may be a little tight.

I originally had the Morse 33C Supremes on my boat and when some prick stole my motor and cut all the controls I replaced them with the Teleflex Xtreme cables.  The Teleflex Xtreme cables are super smooth!

As has already been stated have the cables come into the box directly under the shifter.  :thumright:

EDIT: After further thought I believe the cables I have are Uflex zero friction cables.
