Windshield or not?
« on: November 07, 2014, 07:30:11 AM »
In the process of restoring my 1971 22.2 flatback, and thinking about not refitting a windshield and the funky stock aluminum grab bar.  Opinions?

That's a great question.  I have the same question for my flatback project.  With my half tower, I probably won't install one.  But I know I like to hide behind the one on my 205 on cold days.  I may look at getting an Eisenglass enclosure down the road.  So I would say, if you are not adding a tower, keep it for the functionality of it.  Just my opinion of course.

I personally like a windshield.  Gives you a little protection and keeps bugs out of your mouth while running :thumright:

Definitely a windshield.

When you're running and eating fried chicken it keeps the greasy skin from flying all over your face, therefore you are more attractive/romantic

I have a huge windshield on my 170 and since I have no other place to hide in cold or rainy weather, I love it.
I always wondered if it was a big drag on my speed and one day a buddy and I were out on it and crossed a huge wake being left by a 50+ ' SeaRay cruising down the ICW.  When we came off the top of the wake and slammed down on the other side the all around light on top of the windshield frame swiveled down and smashed into the windshield shattering the tempered glass into a couple million little pieces.  My buddy and I were sitting behind that windshield at the time and it was quite a shock
Anyway, after I threw out a couple millions pieces of glass I then tested the theory of the wind drag and found out the speed was the same with or without a windshield.
They're good for what they are designed for.
I vote for a windshield  :thumright:

If you are in driving distance to Brandon Fl 33510 Plastics America will take your old one and make a new one to the same specifications.  I did that on my Osprey and was very happy.. About a 5-7 day turn-around.  They even give you the drill bit and rubber grommets to re-drill the mounting holes.

Grab rail around the windshield is a must too. It helps prevent the dim witted flatland farmers that are aboard from grabbing the windshield in a panic and breaking it..

Yes I throw my own hay so I can say that..  (Although I do live on TOP of a hill)
