Commercial grouper boats use that method here every day. Thats the only way they pull anchor. Most don't even use a ball until the end of the day.  When the anchor breaks loose they increase speed, the anchor rises to the surface like a planer. They pull the anchor across the ocean to the next fishing hole, get on the #, run the anchor course past the spot and spin the boat around. Anchor falls to the bottom, sets, they drift back down the rode to the ledge.

If you've been around here very long, you know I'm quick to pounce on "questionable information" so too I also support creditable experience.
In this case, I'm guessing Gran was misunderstood on the technique.  
Why??

Well I spent a fair amount of time fishing in the Marquesas' with "Capt. Andy" aboard the Audry (his mommy's name). He used this technique extensively. His first drop on Friday afternoon was the last time he touched the anchor till Sunday for the ride home. He steamed back around the hook and snatched it off the floor. As he headed to the next spot the anchor would indeed plane and when the rode broke the surface, he turned into it and I'd would snatch it with a boat hook. I'd haul it in just like I gaffed a fish and hook it around the rear port cleat. It rode there until we hit the next drop. He'd throttle back, then yell and I would unhook the rode from the cleat. Just as Scott described.

I'm thinking the confusion lies in his description or he has seen "JAWS" too many times.

Same technique and result, slightly different method. As your captain  "steamed back  around"..... the anchor at some point broke bottom from a 180 degree direction.

He would have used less time and fuel had he steamed straight up the anchor rode, opposite the initial set

All good. Point is, if pulling anchor in wind/current, pulling opposite the set from the easiest-working stern cleat is in general safe and effective.

All in jest my friend regarding your Marquesas captain. Experienced, successful commercial captains know seamanship, regardless of port. Glad this had a safe and happy ending and the boats were recovered. You guys did an excellent, efficient, quick job there.
