First Michael Jordon moved here - now Denny Hamlin is building his "Lake Cottage"

Sept. 24 Racecar driver Denny Hamlin is building a house with a total of 31,377 square feet of heated living area on Molly Pop Lane, according to a building permit issued by the Town of Cornelius. If completed as expected, this will be far and away the largest home in Cornelius, which is already known for its palatial pads.

According to the permit, the lakefront house will have 19,401 square feet of heated living area and 11,976 square feet of unheated space. The design includes a substantial breezeway between the main house and the accessory garage.

Hamlin himself is huge. He drives the No. 11 FedEx Toyota for Joe Gibbs Racing in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series. His Facebook page has 128,413 “likes.” He could not be reached for comment. There are no details about the design. The property itself consists of two lots which were acquired by Hamlin's company, Won One, for roughly $2 million earlier this year. At least one existing home on the site has been torn down.

In 2013, Hamlin sold a house at the end of Peninsula Point Drive, one of the largest homes in The Peninsula, for $3.4 million. It has a total of 14,460 square feet of space, 9,669 heated. The house on Molly Pop is more than twice the size.

I guess it is hard to make a living as a poor 'ol NASCAR driver, huh?
