1992 Osprey 175
« on: August 29, 2014, 10:27:49 PM »
Good evening to everyone. I will say hello and first round of drinks are on me! I just picked up a 92 175 with a 150 black max for a pretty good price. I have alot of work to do to her, I already replaced axle and running gear on trailer. The lower unit was pulled due to hard shifting. Water was the culprit, so I have a rebuilt unit from SternDrive that I will pick up maybe Tuesday.

I have alot of screw holes to fill. I am familiar with Gelcoat. My question is there are several holes in the transom that I want to fill. I would like to inject a little bit of resin and finish with gel. Is this the correct repair? Same with several in the deck. Is the transom wood or poured on this model? Inside the screw holes it seems pretty hard.

Anyways thanks in advance, and I am working on some pics.

Any idea what was behind or in place of this aluminum plate?

And how the hell do I post full size pics?

You copied the thumbnail code.  Copy the next code (image) and you'll get full size pics.

As for the question abouy what was behind here - only the previous owner would know why he cut that out.

any performance feedback with that 150 on there? that's a good bit more than the approved max hp, wondering how the boat handles it

It was the tackle storage/station.

Thanks for the feedback. I haven't run it myself since the l/U IS locked up. Guy said it would run 45 all day long. Plenty fast for me.
Also I figured a tackle locker.

Today I am filling up a few old screw holes. Working on matching the gel. I will definitely need some advice on buffing the boat when done. Also I am removing the bottom paint from the sides an transom.

One last thing is the leaning post is way to tall. Going to shorten it a few inches. Or I might just use a cooler seat.
Thanks guys and I'll report back.

Welcome aboard, thanks for the drinks!

Regarding your transom/deck holes question...since you're finishing with gelcoat, you'll need to gel over polyester or vinylester resin, not epoxy. So after you dig out the holes, overdrill, etc, mix up a good thick paste of chop or cabosil. You could also use fiberglass-impregnated Bondo above the waterline.

Some folks like to go with epoxy here, as it offers a bit of flex vs. polyester. Most then shoot with Awlgrip etc. to finish as paint is compatible with epoxy.

Keep us posted :salut:

The PO stole the tackle center
That's weird - why not leave it in there?
BTW, with a 150 on the back you need to be careful - should be a rocket, 50+, have fun but be careful

Had alot of fun today. Sanded bottom paint, removed bilge and live well pump and ready to pull new wires for both. Also found out that the front storage box had a pump in it a well. All switches are crap. So the shopping list is:

1. aerator pump
2. wire for both pumps
3. new switches on console
4. leaning post modified(shortened) Currently it is 32" Sitting on that I can put my feet on the console. A little to high. Working on the right height. Suggestion are welcomed
5. new upholstery on the leaning post and front console pad with matching bimini top.

I do agree this boat should be stupid fast. PO said 45. But that is with the water speedometer on the boat. I would venture to say its off or he really didnt know how to drive a boat. Motor looks a little low even without the foot on it. I will get it tuned in, its not my first rodeo. I have been boating for 15 plus years :thumleft:

heres mine. got her put together enough to take on a river run tomorrow to try out the new additions. this is my leaning post that I put in (today actually). I got it from S&E customs on ebay, it came 32" tall which was too tall. I had it cut down 2" and its about perfect IMO but tomorrow will be the maiden voyage and a good test. I think it really depends what you like to do more, rough water and standing up/leaning more, or just cruising and sitting more. mine came with the backrest and is really pretty comfortable to sit on with youre feet on the flip out footrest or to prop up against while standing.

PS- mine runs about 37mph by the GPS with my 88spl that im sure isn't still at its rated HP level. so with a 150 I bet itd be pretty wicked. I was thinking about going up to a 135 to really help with the holeshot and gain some topend

My 1987 with a 1997 90HP ocean pro on it gets up on a plane and downright boogies.  That thing will be scary fast with the 150.  Be careful..  I hope she has hydraulic steering!

Good looking sled! I am thinking the post is to high still. But I guess Im looking at a sitting post. My old offshore boat post was good for both, but there was a place for your feet under the console. Im thinking in the 28" range.

BTW color matching gel is a biotch!!! Too white, now too gray.....I have a pint of white gel. My question it what can I thickin it with then add piqment? I have wood fiber and some brown filler?? Had it a while but it expandes a bunch. Right now I have a gel coat kit from west marine with the gel clear. The gel stuff is easy to work with as there is no drips.

Last question those of us here in Florida any place to purchase wire and electric supplies? Im in Citrus county and travel to Tampa and Clearwater area almost daily.

I'm in Citrus Co too, but I don't know of a decent affordable marine wire place around here.  I get most of my stuff from GenuineDealz or Greg's Marine ( both on eBay).  Good stuff, good prices, and fast shipping.

thanx. just got back from our river ride. leaning post IMO was about perfect height, MAYBE 1/2" lower would've been nice. with the footrest down it was nice to sit on and I could easily drive and with the rest up I could prop and drive comfortably. I think 28" would be nice for a primarily sitting type stand but would be too low to prop up against comfortably. also the backrest was a VERY nice addition for when I was sitting.

Ya looking at your other post, I see the footrest. Looks good. Im just trying to figure a happy spot for a 6'1" guy can sit and stand. And when sitting not be slouched over.

Thanks as well CLM65, Funny I had Gregs wire web page already open and prices are good.
