Removing the VIN plate for a rebuild... does the DMV care?
« on: August 17, 2014, 10:45:14 PM »
Maybe im watching too many classic car restoration shows... but legally is it a big deal to drill out the rivets of the VIN plate, rebuild the transom and re-rivet the plate back on when the project is done? Is this a DMV no no? Is there anything special I need to do? Should I avoid removing it at all costs?

I'm not sure it matters.  As long as when you're done the HIN is back on it.  I think there is another one under a rubrail on the port side too.

Someone here said when they replaced their transom, it was removed with the old skin. When they put the new skin/transom on, they made one from stainless or aluminum. It was attached by screws I think.

I was curious about this also.  My Proline has (or had) the # molded into the transom skin. Im not sure if there is another one somewhere else on the boat.   Since I've been rebuilding the boat, I've since grinded all of the original # away.  I was planning on making a stainless plate and attaching with screws.

My 19-6 had the transom worked on by previous owner and they ground off the hull id #..got a warning from the the CG on a safety check and had a stainless plate made with the hull ID cut into it and painted. Attached with screws. Passed next check with flying colors and nothings been said since..but this is in North Carolina and not all states view everthing the same :salut:
