Trying to join the club - Having NO Luck.
« on: July 24, 2014, 05:49:55 AM »
Hello all,

For the past few weeks I've been trying to join the club, and having absolutely no luck. I'm in the market for a mid-90's 175 Osprey in the Central Florida area.

Here's what I'm running across. People have either severely overvalue their boats, or they're gone in hours. I'm in the market expecting to spend $3,500 or so based on what I've been seeing, but the boats in that price range that are in anywhere close to decent condition seem to be gone in no time.

I haven't even heard back from the past 5 sellers I've tried to contact, and all the listings have been gone when I came back to check them the next day. Getting frustrating.

I've tried to get in touch with this guy for the past 2 weeks, and can't get a call back. http://lakeland.craigslist.org/boa/4548652601.html

Who knows.

Anyway, what's do you guys feel is a fair price for a mid-90's 175, on a trailer, at this point? I've been seeing them listed anywhere from $3,000 -$6,000 and feel the low side is more than fair for a 17-20 year old boat.

Am I crazy?

Hoping to join the club soon.

Gary

I would say based on the condition of the boat/motor/trailer - 35-5 could be worth it.  Fresh everything - new transom, sole, engine, paint, etc - that's when they get out of sight.
Try pricing the parts (boat, motor, trailer) out separately on nada, iboats, etc and that should help you figure out a starting point.

Welcome aboard :salut:

That's a nice 175 and appears in fair shape for its age. Too bad he doesn't answer.
Who knows, it may be a scam.

Coralkeys, you a Ranger Ricks fan :?:

Good luck with the hunt. :thumleft:

Hadn't heard of Ranger Ricks, I'm actually from the Florida Keys, and the name of the High School down there is Coral Shores, so that's where the username came from. I guess I'm kind of out of the loop on those kinds of things, we just used to take our 23' Pro-Line Cuddy out all the time.

Still on the hunt, and hoping for some better luck over the coming week or so. If anyone sees a 175 pop up in the Central FL area, that's not in the usual places (craigslist, ebay, boattrader) make sure you let me know.

I'm still kind of surprised how quickly these boats are moving once they're posted. I know it's the Summer and all, but seeing boats move in a day or two wasn't what I was expecting.

I did see one pop-up for sale here locally, that ended up for sale in Tampa for $2500 more than the price in Orlando. I have a feeling there are a lot of dealers cherry-picking the cheaper boats, and marking them up a few hours away.

Ricks was the "Ranger" in charge of the make believe Coral Key State Park, the Hollywood home of Flipper. A poor man's version of John Pennekamp.

CSH shares the same mascot as a little private school in Miami. Same colors as my high school in Miami. I've passed it many times over the years. 8)

Do you recall the Futura Yacht Club just a little further south?

Good luck with the hunt. That's really where the fun is. Owning and maintenance is very overrated.

Not that this will be much help but.. there are two mid to late 90's - 175's that I saw listed for well over a month now... maybe two in Murrells Inlet SC. If your willing to take a trip... and if your willing to go up a bit. They both are listed for mid to high 6K's. But my experience is they probably can be had for a couple grand less than that.

They show up on BoatTrader if you google for SC and Aquasport 175 for sale. Marine Service Center

I've not personally seen them but was almost heading that way to do so when I ended up with my 165 Striper

Of the two, I think the later 1998 with the 90 horse Johnson, would be my choice if things inspected out. I truly believe it could be bought for nearer to 5K.

Might be worth a trip to Myrtle Beach as you can see two of them in one place?

The one you posted in your first post, has a broken off skeg on that motor. Something to consider. I searched Craigslist in the Miami area and there are a lot of 170-175's down there that look in decent condition for the coin you want to drop. Just be patient they are there.

Thats the bad side to Craigslist sellers, if it's sold some of them take forever to remove the add(if ever) and others just don't return calls even if they still have it for sale..Hang in there you will find what you want....trick is keep looking, the deal you want can be had :salut:

Yeah, I'm still on the hunt. I've got automated alerts filling my inbox all the time, but nothing has popped up yet. If anything shows up in the state, I should get an alert in my inbox on anything with "aquasport" in the title.

Today a 29' restoration project showed up... if I only had the space to put the thing. If it's solid, it looks like a hell of a deal on a big boat. http://spacecoast.craigslist.org/boa/4585182414.html

Welcome aboard!

All of the old rides are nice....and all are capable of lifting a load with low horsepower. So....in your quest for a 170, consider a 19-6 or 22-2.

Realize you're in the Keys....but you may need to expand the scope of the search in order to get "The One."

They are out there....but the dollbabies are getting tougher to find as interest and appreciation for our old classics increase.

I'm actually not in the Keys anymore, I just grew up there. I'm in the Central FL area now so Orlando, Tampa, Daytona, Space Coast would all be within a couple hours for me.

And I've been looking at a few of the 19's, but anything bigger and it's not going to be do-able with the lake I'm on. The ramp at the lake I live on probably wouldn't be called a "ramp" anywhere else, more of a steep drop with a few pebbles on it. There's no pavement, and it's rarely maintained. I have a big truck to pull the thing out, but if the boat is too big I won't have enough room to back the trailer before the bottom drops off and the boat ends up pulling everything into the lake. :(

Gran, were there supposed to be links in that post?

Of course one pops up, and I won't be able to get down to Bradenton to see it until the weekend. http://sarasota.craigslist.org/boa/4592269239.html

Anyone in Bradenton who wants to go take a look? ;)

That old Evinrude kind of scares me though.

Well, guess there could have been if the PC here at the house weren't so fickle.

Go to "view active topics" it is the thread entitled "19-1"
