On board battery charger installlation

I want to install a small charger like a Deltran battery Tender inside the console permanently connected to the battery with a plug/connector through the side of the console to be plugged in to an extension cord as needed without having to crawl inside the console.

1. Does anyone have experience doing this or something like it?

2. Is it dangerous to have gas from charging trapped inside the console?

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

It's done everyday.  I will mount a 3 bank charger in my console when I get to that point in the rebuild.

I just purchased and installed a pro-mariner Gen 3- 12 Amp 2 Bank.  It's is waterproof and provides conditioning for your batteries when not in a charge or maintain mode.  Found a guy on THT (ChargerGuy.com) who sells factory refurbs for 50% of msrp.  Good service.

Its super easy to install.  Really just 3 wires:

A) Connection to a normal 110v service
B) 2 wire sets, one for each battery (Pos & Neg Lead)

That is it.

I actually mounted the DELTRAN charger in my Glove Box of the Osprey, output goes straight into my dual battery switch, so I can charge #1 , #2 or both.  Mounted a 2-gang weatherproof receptacle in the console, wired to a Male 115 VAC receptacle in the side of the console.  It accepts the female end of the extension cord running from the house.  Easy and convenient., pretty sure there's a pic in here somewhere of my install..

I keep the door to the glove box open while its charging, after a day or so when the green light comes on I switch my batt switch to off, and disconnect the extension cord.  In the summer its pretty warm, so I leave the door open for cooling ventilation purposes

yes, batts are in console, wiring goes straight up into the glove box.

The glove box idea sounds perfect as well as the permanent plug on the side of the console.

When it cools down a little I'll have to climb aboard and check on room. The former owner put an FM CD radio in there as well as the VHF.

Did you have to hard wire the charger into the outlet or did you find one that is female inside the console and male on the outside so you could plug in the charger inside the console and the female end of an extension cord on the outside of the console?

The ones I have seen look like they have to be hard wired to the inlet.

Ok, this is mounted on the port side of the console, wired to a standard aluminum 2 gang outdoor weather proof box which is mounted inside the console.  The DELTRAN charger simply plugs into the outlet just like it would on the outside of your house or any other regular outlet.  This waterproof socket is male, so it accepts the female end of the extension cord... very simple.

I was trying to avoid cutting the charger cord and just plug it into the back of the inlet port but guess I will just have to cut it.

The gang box install seems to be the only cost effective way around that.

Down the road however, you do gain the advantage of servicing/replacement of the charger by just unplugging it from the outlet under the console.
