The problem is Mercury stopped model year designation to serial number in 1996. The only way to know year of manufacture was the little sticker that basically had the year on it with the specific serial number which you do not have. Without the specific serial number of the original assembly that is tied to the component you are trying to use, it is difficult to understand compatibilty of parts when trying to piece together across a range of serial numbers. Your 3.0 was produced as a carb'd, EFI,and DFI versions with lots of changes along the way. The best way to find out what you have is to visually identify what you have and try to find the serial number range it was used on. This is all tied to the powerhead serial number. This means going through every serial number range and look for clues to a change by visual identification on the parts diagram or when the part number changed it usually meant something fundemental. I know this isnt much help but this is what it is.

Ok, so the merc shop I purchased the mid from stated the following in regards to the water pump:

they are all the same 2000-2005 47- 89984T 3

Since all the parts sites list parts via serial number ranges, I have no idea what range applies to my specific mid. However, with your experience, is the statement above correct?

Also, to add to the confusion, that part number is just for the impeller. From what I can gather, in the course of making the optimax, there has been 3 different impeller housings made.....

Based on Sierra's website, they all use the same impeller including Vrods. Sierra seems to do a good job of giving the whole range of serial numbers as it applies to a certain part that may be of value to you. Their offering is basic but help with information gathering.

Tried to copy and paste the actual page but page 343-346 in the Merc applications of cooling system parts will give you an idea of what i'm talking about.

Awesome!

Major breakthrough here, the merc salvage place I bought the mid section from, sent me the serial number off the motor:

0T385238

So, the Sierra water pump kit (which includes the housing), is a common part between the two lower ends. As I suspected, the difference is the coupling from the housing to the water pipe. SO, I'm hoping the $15 dollar part is the answer to linking the mid to the lower.

Outstanding still, is the barb returns from the tstats. From the thermostats, the barb is designed to accept 3/8 house. The Barb for the exhaust is designed for what looks to be 1/2 or bigger. They are brass fittings, so my first thought is to see if I can find a 3/8 barb with the correct thread pattern at home depot/ ace hardware, etc.

Handsome and a hit with the ladies maybe, maybe not.

He did however die young and was the gentleman who uttered that famous line you somewhat quoted.

This is Colon in "Bride of Frankenstein" as he exclaims "She's alive!! Alive!!"

Someone was talking about thread steals. This is actually a derail. But it was begun by the author and nurtured by a moderator, so it is cool. This pic is "Added Value".

Indeed, :thumright:

Our Colin's (aka Fletch) quote comes from the prequel "Frankenstein".

Rules are the rules Bob. 200 Hail Marys and 10 hours of litter work on the interstate. God is watching, and he knows the admin password.
