FB power - opinions wanted!
« on: June 27, 2014, 09:56:32 AM »
Guys -

I'm struggling with making a decision on what to put on the back of my hull......1969 22-2 FB that we have now extended 2' so we're looking at 24'2 plus porta bracket.  We are extending the keel to help reduce the likelihood of a spin-out but I need input/wisdom from this forum.

This boat will be a family fishing/boating vessel and I do not need to go 60mph.  Safety is #1.

I was thinking Honda/Suzuki 150 or 175 (Zuki) but with the new Evinrude G2's coming out soon I'm now considering them - the issue is the smalled motor is 200HP....is that too much??

Sound off!

Thanks in advance.

Just my opinion, but with the added 2', I wouldn't go less than a 175.  I don't think the 200 is too much power, but I believe the G2 is quite a bit heavier than your typical 200.  I don't know how much that would affect a 24-2, but it would be significant on a 22-2.

a 200hp motor is never too much for a 24' plus boat.  and people always say they dont need to go fast...thats fine...just dont push that handle down so far.  when the time comes that you mean need that extra power to outrun a storm or help you get out of trouble in an inlet with following seas, youll be thankful.

Hi,

How many folks will you be crewing? You and your wife, a 150 would be fine. Four bubbas, ice, tackle, beer and chicken....go with the 200.

Most motors have similar weights for horsepower ranges. For example the older evinrude 175 is the same as the 150 just carburetated differently. Same thing for the 200 which is just a detuned 225. I think the etecs may be the same. Point is you might as well go with a 175 if you were thinking 150 or a 225 if you were thinking 200. Go with the greater horsepower for the similar engine weight class.  I agree with a prior poster that it's better to have it and not use it than to not have it. But that comes with weight limits as most of the aquasports are stern heavy which affects self bailing decks. Also I would not recommend exceeding manufacturer hp ratings.

I think the G2 would be a bit much since that is a larger engine class than the standard 200 ETEC.  Plus I don't think you'll be able to get your hands on one anytime soon.  And if you do find one your gonna pay a premium.  Also keep in mind the dealers will want to make room for them so you might get a good deal on a G1 Etec.  Same thing with repowers,  guys with deep pockets will repower just to have the latest and greatest.... That's what I'm hoping for to find a used 300 Etec in the next year.  With that said a 175 or a 200 would be a nice match.

Wow the G2 looks sick! I'm an Evinrude guy so this is exciting to me. But, I could only imagine the price and as with anything mechanical it's proven you don't want the first year of a new model. Give them a year or two to work the bugs out. There is nothing wrong with the Etecs, they are great motors and my first choice if I had deeper pockets.

Great advice by the Forum gang as usual.......the new G2 is 550 pounds - quite bit heavier than the G1 or 175's mentioned.....the extra weight is also a concern.

My crew will be Mama and three young kids but there will be days where we have some Bubba's and beers/ice.  LOL.

Thanks guys!  Keep the opinions coming.  Appreciate y'all!

Capt Matt pushes his flatty with a 150 with lots of people, livewells, tower, etc just fine. The 2 feet shouldnt make much difference in HP requirements. Remember the flatty planes easier than a Mod V and they were ran with 85hp motors when originally built. A 150-175 would be way more than enough and burn less fuel than that 200 big block, plus lighter

Good points Kev. The flattie jumps on plane. Saw it first-hand two days ago running an unrestored 1970 with 115 Yammie. Got up and ran, right now.

Given the two foot extension...the 175 Zuke may be top choice, HP vs. weight. Ton of hole shot, even with a bubba crew

Why not twin 90s?

Be really cool to find a pair of Yam TRP motors.. You'd go broke buying wheels for it by that would be an efficient rig the the ability to plane in  get home pinch..

The new 'Rude g2 is big at 3.2 litres and heavy, but there's no replacement for displacement and that mota should really haul the mail!  Go big, but look at twin 115s before you pull da trigga..

I have a 200 on my 1970 22-2 flatback.  It's a great choice.  The boat jump on plane with a bunch of people & full tank of gas.  It is pretty efficient because it only need around 3000 rpm to keep her going at a decent pace.

ill be powering mine with a Merc 225EFI, its overkill but it was too cheap to pass up, and its similar weight to the Merc 150 4stroke i had originally planned on running... ill run it for a bit and save up and trade it on a new motor down the road
