My first rebuild. 76 170

I figured it was about time I made a thread. I have been a ghost long enough. growing up my cousin and I had a 74 22.2. many great times on that boat. he passed away in 07 in a motorcycle wreck. I came across this 170 and it reminded me of our old 22. same layout inside. I got a great deal on in and want to build it in his memory. or at least until I find a 22 I can afford and start all over haha. this is my first time building a boat. I have some experience with fiberglass, but not much. so thats the back story.

 I picked up a 1976 170 AS. came with a running 88' johnson 90 v4. and trailer for 900. overall not in really bad shape. I have a small soft spot between the stringer and removable panel on the floor where the wiring is. lots of little chips and spider cracks in the gel. and the transom cap has a slight crack. also, at one time someone cut my front hatches in half, so instead of 3 there is 6.  :x  if anyone has the original hatches I would like to get my hands on a set. I will recore if needed.

My plans----

new floor ( not sure if I should remove the liner or not. )

remove old foam, test foam in stringers, might cut them open and pour new foam in.

transom, if I cut the cap off and drill it, if it is dry I should be able to just recap in no?

I was going to keep my console, but have decided against it. its needs alot of body work, and I would rather have one a little more narrow to open the boat up.

new gas tank

new gauges, controls, cleats, lights, all new electrical, radio ECT. I have purchased most of this already.

I plan on spraying gel with duratec.

eventually I have have a 97 115 2 stroke yamaha on it when my brother repowers his boat I am buying his motor.

 I have been watching everyones build threads and  have pmed some members with questions. I know there is a ton of information and very knowledgeable people here. cant wait to show my progress and get on the water! if anyone has any tips, tricks, or opinions please feel free to share. this will be a learning process for me. and hopefully later down the line I can go into a 22.2 tower boat rebuild with full confidence. I will post pics up when I get home from work.

didnt have a tank, so i ordered this one, may take some work though as the fill next isnt angled


now, i have taken a few steps back and decided to do the floor. havent started that yet though.

It may not be too tough to repair those doors. Finding replacements may be difficult. You would have to gut the core out, repair them from the underside then re core them but at least they would be the originals.

i did end up recoring them, im just not happy with the body work, and afraid the non-skid isnt going to hide it well since they were textured and the middle has a smooth line across it from the filler. i will take pocs of the tops when i get a chance.

Weird that the PO moved the rear cleats from the pockets that were designed for them to the cap. :scratch:

as far as doing the floor. could someone explain in more detail. im going to cut out my floor leaving about 2 inches all the way around. when i lay in the new floor should I lay it on top of that 2 inches and tab in from there? or does it but up to the 2 inches and get tabbed in? if I laid it on top wouldnt it raise the height of my new floor and need to build the stringers up higher?

rickk--- yea, he did lots of weird stuff. the reason the front hatches are cut is because he put a casting deck, on top of the casting deck. haha

That is one way and probably the most common.  The first time I did my floor I did it that way and I left the trough in place and laid the new floor on top of the edge of that also.

 Not usually, it would need some support all along the joint.

Yup, the thickness of the old floor.  So you could lay another layer on top of the stringers the thickness of the old floor or maybe just a little higher for a crown effect.

ok, that makes sense. i will prob end up cutting the tops of the stringers off to put new foam in. so i can just build them up a bit when i re-glass them

Here's how I determined how much "spacer" to add to the stringers when redoing my floor(I also did away with the trough) after you remove the floor and leave the 2 inch lip around the edge, just cut you a 2x4  that will lay on the lip side to side, start at the rear(widest) and measure the gap, slide it forward a foot or so and measure there, when you can't slide it any farther due to it getting skinnier, just cut your 2x4 down to fit again and continue on measuring every foot or so till you get to the front deck, this way you only cut 1 2x4 up and you have all the measurements of the gap on both stringers. Your doing great so far :thumright:  Kinda fun cutting one apart :scratch: If you decide not to reuse the trough you can use 4 in pvc pipe, no 90 degree elbows if you can help it. I used 2 pipes, 1 2 inch for fuel, hydraulic steering and transducer, everything else went into a 3 inch pipe (should have been 4 inch would have been easier)
