What happened to your battery? Blowed up, sir!
« on: June 06, 2014, 05:02:05 PM »
Sorry to reference Bill Murray in Stripes, but I have heard of battery explosions, but never actually have seen one - until now...     Went to start the generator on my cruiser last weekend and got a "Boom!" from the engine compartment.  Looked inside and could see smoke coming from the generator starter battery case.  Opened it up and this is what I saw:

I've heard that sometimes a defective battery will internally short and cause an explosion.  You can see from this picture which cell shorted and exploded.  Notice it blew the battery jacket apart on the sides and on the top.  The explosion also cracked the black plastic battery case, but the case did contain the material and there was no damage outside the battery case.   :thumright:   Another good reason to always have batteries inside covers/cases on boats!   :thumleft:  So I'm back in business again now with a new battery and new battery case - all it takes is ANOTHER picture of Benjamin Franklin...

WOW CJ that was lucky!!  Glad you got off that easy…  Have seen much different results of that same event only with a small fire that went nuts when panicked folks threw water on it for an even bigger boom..

You might want to buy a lotter ticket!
