That backfire was IT!!!!!

So I am guessing that when the boy got onto that 70 on the hydro, he had it venting until he backed off then came onto it? That thing took off like a scared cat!

I was lucky enough to get to stand about ten feet behind a B-17 when they were tuning the #1 engine.. When they touched that old girl off that big'ole P&W R-1690 coughed a HUGE cloud of blue smoke then barked outta her stove pipe exhaust so loud that you couldn't hear it, it just shook your bones... Man that was cool! They ran her up and the supercharger started glowing white, you could feel the heat from a distance.

Modern tech is cool but the stuff built in the '40s,50's and 60's....  Words just can't accurately describe how cool it is that a lot of it still runs and runs hard!!

There is nothing like the sound of a big radial or a Merlin engine...  music pure music.  Incredible machines designed and built by hand....  blood sweat and tears.  Machines built by the greatest generation amaze me. They made huge leaps in technology in just a few years and there wasn't a computer in sight.  Just incredible imagination and ingenuity.  Jets are cool but they just don't have a soul like a propeller driven aircraft.  Just starting one of those things is an art form.  Nothing that today's push button touch screen kids know anything about.
