22.2 flatback or 12 degree
« on: July 17, 2006, 05:54:12 PM »
In my research of the 22.2 it appears the 12 degree deadrise came into play somehwere around 1973/74.  Can anyone confirm this?

I am looking for a shallow water boat to fish backwater and to also use for family fun up and down the intercostal on the east and west coast of florida.  I often get in water under 12" so draft is an issue.  So I am trying to decide what boat to chase.

Is the draft difference between the flatback and the 12 degree very much.  I see from steved's spec sheet that the 12 degree had a draft of 9" assuming this info is correct.  What was the draft of the flatback?

I am in the market for professionaly refurbished 22.2 so keep me in mind.  I don't mind one that was redone a few years ago if it was done correctly.  I am interested in the Boca Grand style conversion with a dual station tower and closed transom with a porta bracket.

Many thanks for all your responses in advance.

So the flatback draws 8" with the 12 degree pushing 9".

I also understand that the pre 12 degree 22.2 had above floor fuel cells but that many have lifted the deck moved the steering station forward and put in a below deck fuel cell.

I also have read that the flatback were not self bailing but that by rasiing the deck in a retrofit the rebuild attained a truly self bailing deck.  Is this correct.

Kris Kraft,

Yes, the 22-2 started the 12 degree in 1973.

If you are looking for a shallow water boat that will "go in less than 12""  I would suggest the flatback.   It will run and float in less water.  But, it will not take a chop as well as the 12deg.

I do not own a flatback (I have a 73' 22-2) but I think the 8" draft is without power??  But, I am not sure.  Maybe someone that owns a flatback can confirm this?

I was told that the flatback with power is somewhere in the area of 10" while the 12deg. with power is around 11".  I am not sure here either cause I am just starting my rebuild.

Good luck,
Mike
