dual station control options
« on: May 01, 2014, 10:03:17 PM »
looking into getting a tower on my boat, it will be a mini/half tower, and trying to get everything lined up for what I'll need.
I currently have cable steering, and a Yamaha 704 Binnacle controlling my '99 Yamaha 150 VMAX.

I have a second 704 binnacle, is there some kind of linkage box that is made where I can use each of the 704's, or do I need to get a morse or Teleflex setup.

Assuming I also need to get a hydraulic steering setup. Is the Seastar the best way to go or an other recommendations?

Thanks!

Chris, you'll need Yam's dual station kit if you want to stay with the 704s.  I've done a couple, a bit pricey...

Don't buy a Yammi system!!!  You can get another 704 control box if you want to keep the footprint on the lower station, but get a Teleflex (seastar solutions) dual station kit, 1 for shift, 1 for throttle.  It is mechanical so you won't get alarms and kick out of gear like the Yammi system.  It also has a shift lock out switch so only 1 station can control at a time.

Seastar steering is the only way to go for dual station.

thanks for the tips and recommendations! Ordered the Teleflex Dual Station units for throttle and gear... need to track down a station selector switch now.

Any hot leads and/or recommendations on a hydraulic steering setup (assuming I cant keep my cable steering setup)... I know I will need atleast the SeaStar setup (Baystar is not compatible with a dual station setup as far as I can tell from what I've read). and the 2.0 is more desirable than the 1.7 right?

Anyone ever pieced together a steering setup from craigslist, lots of "pieces" to a system on there, but no complete sets...

thanks again everyone! bummed the meet-up isnt this weekend, was looking forward to it. (as the rain has now stopped- go figure)...

Don't think the rain is quite done yet, Chris...

The key to "piecing" together a system like this is to know all your P/N's.  And I mean all of them, 'cause it sucks if you overlook something, then when you go to rig it all...oops, don't have this or that.  Once you know the particulars, then start googling the P/N's.  Some you might be able to get off CL.  Some, you might have to get from outfits like Great Lakes Skipper.  Some you might get from retailers like Star Marine Depot or Boatersland.  But it can be done, without TOO much hassle... :thumright:
