Oil line routing in 2003 Ficht Ram 175
« on: April 21, 2014, 08:37:18 AM »
I have the engine all connected and ready to run (new to me engine).   Except I have a missing hose in the oil system.

Oil comes in from the tank (the only oil line or fitting on the OMC/BRP stock 1.8 gal tank), through an inline filter, to the inlet on the diaphagm pump on the front of the engine.   From there, a hose runs to the injection pump just below the diaphragm pump.   Then there is another oil line port on that same injection pump.

The Seloc manual says, and the parts fiche shows, a fitting / hose / pressure regulator / and then another hose "that returns oil to the oil tank".

Can someone explain the return line to me?  There is no second fitting on the oil tank to accept a return oil line.

I believe that the regulator is a simple check valve that holds back pressure, creating the pressure needed for the simple oil pump and that the oil that gets past that check valve must simply "T" back into the oil line somewhere ahead of or behind the in-line oil filter.    Is that correct?

Kevin, I assume your OMC tank doesn't have the return line fitting like this one...

You have to drill the appropriate sized hole (the kit comes with instructions) in the top of the tank and install the fitting...

I have the same tank, and I did notice it had what looked like punch outs for some fitting but didn't connect the two when I started reading about a return line.

Ok I'll look for the various hoses and tank fitting.   What a production.

Thanks for the info.

Ok.  For over $200 I have ordered all the parts in the oil return path back to the tank.   Thanks again for the info.

This is all because the place I got the engine from - Affordable Marine in Plainville CT - lost or destroyed most of the rigging parts they were supposed to include when I bought the engine from them.   Harness, oil tank, key switch, shift linkage parts, oil line.

Buyer beware.

Oh really, Kevin.  So, you paid for these rigging parts, you didn't get them...what did this fine outfit have to say about that?  Any reduction in sale price?

Bob,
 little OT but here goes.
Have you heard of a fuel line upgrade kit for the FICHT motors?
I guess there was or is an issue w the Schrader valve loosing up?
I don't know much more than that at this point.

No Bryan, I am unaware of this issue.  I'll do a little poking around...

Bob -

I paid for the engine which included my trade.   The receipt said "2003 175 ficht ram and all rigging".

They were to just take my (disconnected) engine off and hang the 2003 engine, and just include all the rigging parts in a box for me to set up.

I chased them around for weeks just to get the oil tank, at which point now it's clear they gave me some other tank, not the correct one with the return.   The shift linkage was missing parts, the little lower cowling black plastic 'door' was missing the screws, they cut the wire harness, when they picked up the engine with a forklift they cracked the lower housing, and now it appears they didn't include the oil return line parts.

They are a salvage yard mostly.  I did make them run the engine for me but then they took total advantage that I don't live nearby.  If I did I would pester them relentlessly until I got all the parts.   Live and learn.

Kevin, I guess the "Affordable" part of their name can be taken a few ways...
