How did the under gunnel rod holders attach on a 200 osprey?
« on: March 31, 2014, 11:30:17 AM »
I did some searching with no real answers.  How did the original rod holders attach?  short screws in the side liner, screws down into lower gunnel and down from top gunnel?  And what was the spacing on them back from the where the rods tips would enter the PVC?  I plan on making a set from 1/2 starboard.

Kevin (86aqua) to the white phone please!

My bet is they just screw into the gunwales, not sure about the spacing. My 83 222 has open gunwales with the teak rodholders so I am of no help.

I can't speak for 200s, but what I have always done is a 48" spread between rod racks.  That way, if someone wants to stow a 5' boat rod there, they'll work.  Not saying you'll find a bunch of broomsticks on a 200 Osprey, but if there are, they can stow them...

what i really need to know is how to secure them.  how much room is there between the liner and the outer hull there?  doesnt look like much.  is there wood between them?  i need a place to store my 8' pole anchor is the biggest thing.

Jason, what I do, after I've determined the location of the rod racks, is drill a small hole (1/8" will do) right where the rack is going to be positioned.  Once I get through the liner, I stop drilling and push the drill bit through the hole until it hits the hullside.  Grab the bit right at the hole and pull it out.  The bit below your fingers is how much room you have between the liner and the hullside, dictating what length screws to use.

You can't see them in this pic, but after the racks are secured using the cleats along side them, we secured through the gunnel into the front side of the racks (behind the bolsters) to keep them from rotating and loosening if some one gave them a swift kick.  These are on a 225 Osprey...

I just saw this thread, let me go look at mine as I don't remember exactly. I'm at work so I cant look. After I wake up today, Ill look and confirm. I think they screw into the linner base and the top under the cap not into the side liner however? I ripped mine out and plan on doing something different so I didnt pay much attention. Are you talking about the original teak or after market? Do you need measurements as well for placement?

Im talking about the original teak.  Mine were gone when I bought the boat so I don't even know what they look like.  I have some 1/2 starboard i plan on making a pair out of.  Measurements would be awesome.  Maybe a good pic of the original if you still have it.  Hell, if you don't want them, give me a price for them.  Ill use them for templates lol.  Thanks Aqua.

As for attachment points, there are pads on the top and bottom. The bottom pad attaches to the bottom of the liner as shown in the above photo.

As for the top it has a screw under the teak side trim that goes on the piece that fits over the removable rod storage cap. What a pain to get to.

As for having mine, you can as a pattern. The tops are broken on both and have no other value. Just send me a PM with your address and Ill drop them into the mail.

PM sent.  you're my new best friend.

as for the top, i may just put a couple nice screws from the top of the removable cap with finish washers.  that does looks like a pain.  we'll see.

You remove the exterior teak which gives your access to the screw. Then remove that screw. This keeps the top smooth and clean so nothing catches.

none of the teak came with the boat.  right now its just the edge of the fiberglass.  its clean, straight and painted but i may add a trim piece of something later.  but if i understand this right, i now probably have not mounting point?  is the piece in the pic the rod holder or teak trim piece?  here is a shot showing what my cap looks like.

not a great pic.  but you get the idea.

this shows the rear a little.
