Jackplate 6" setback and cable steering
« on: March 28, 2014, 02:53:14 PM »
Is this even compatible? I was looking at how the steering cable comes out to the motor and its pretty straight (90degrees). Has anyone run a jackplate with cable steering?

Yes. It is actually more compatable than using hydraulic steering.

You can use mechanical steering with a fixed jaclplate as long as the cable is not put into a bind because of the offset. If you are using a hydraulic jackplate then I strongly recommend using hydraulic steering because of the flex allowance in the lines. I broke a mechanical steering cable even with a fixed jack because of bind in the cable which didn't appear severe but it let go at about 4 years from new. I'm so spoiled with hydraulic steering on my 22-2 and 18 flats boat that I would never go back to mechanical steering as evidenced by 3-4 complete mechanical helm systems hanging up in the shop looking for a home.

Hydraulic steering is very nice. This is actually my first cable setup that ive had. BUt... not sure i want to add $1K to the jackplate cost to add it.

15' cable, Farley.  Helms?  Big-T, Safe-T, QC II, NFB, whatever ya got.  13" wheel would be spiffy (I have a 14 and a 15" SS Destroyer, but too big)...

Trip over to Palm Coast in the near future?

Bob, let me check stock. Over to Tavares this weekend for the antique boat show. Good place to pitch the 700 for sale. If there was ever a place to sell her, that's is it.

Correct, now across the lake in Tavares. Might be worth a trip this weekend to move the 700.

Farley, weather is supposed to be crappy tomorrow, have a boat being picked up...not a good weekend.  That sucks, I LOVE that show!!!

Gonna clean everything up, put the 700 on CL, here and Orlando...

If you get any interest, let me know, Farley.  She's hanging by the hoist in the shop, all safe and sound...
