New (used) motor for Slipaway
« on: March 24, 2014, 08:46:48 AM »
I made the drive to Eufaula on Saturday and picked up the twin 175 Johnsons that icemanbryan was looking at last year. The gentleman still had them and just wanted to get rid of them so I think I got a really great deal! Yes the one motor that had the "noise" ended up having a couple of cooked pistons or at least thats what I have been told. Rented a 5 X 8 trailer as he told me the one with the tapping was in pieces. When I arrived I quickly realized that the bad motor was not in pieces but all they had done was remove the intakes and carbs. The only way we were able to load them up was remove the tailgate on the truck and put one in the bed and the other on the trailer. The other motor runs great and I don't feel they are too many issues with it. Once I get it installed I will decide what to do with the other one. Got them in my garage at my rental house which for the moment is unoccupied. It has a nice flat driveway and will be a great place to make the switch out! Last year when I went and checked them out I knew they both looked pretty clean but they were up on his motor stand and i was more worried about the running condition rather than the way they looked. When we lifted them off the stand with his forklift and laid them on the pallet I quickly realized that both of them look very much like new motors. Yes, there is a small amount of sand abrasion on the skegs but absolutely zero corrosion anywhere I can find. even the top of the tilt ram looks like it is new. The recirculating tubes that attach onto the heads onto those hardened fittings that always corrode look brand new. I just hope my gut about the one motor is right!

Pics to follow this afternoon!!!

Videos from last year.

The "good" one.   Edit: This video was having trouble being watched so I deleted and then reloaded it back to youtube. This is the link to the re-release!LOL

Are they the same vintage as the motor on your boat?  Seems you would have one very solid motor and two parts motors, right?

My current 175 Oceanrunner is a 1994 model year. One of the new motors is a 2002 and the other is a 2003. They are not injected, just the carbed versions. I think 90 percent of the 1994 motor would bolt right on the newer ones. The 94 is already sold.

Being a Johnson, Lewis, I would bet your '94 is nearly identical to the new/used motors.  Evinrude got all the fun stuff after BRP took over, with the eventual plan of Johnson falling by the wayside...which it has.  Actually makes sense, why continue to market 2 different brands that are the same thing?

Sort of like the 90s Aquasport 215 Explorer/Wellcraft 210 Coastal.  COMPLETELY identical boats save the badging.  Sure as hell didn't make sense to us...

Great news!

Lewis was going through the box of stuff that came with the twin Johnsons, and in the bottom of the box was a flo-scan for twins

Thanks for the call Lew! :thumright:
