I am looking at a 1988 290FX express fisherman. Any body owns this boat? The boat i am looking at has Mercruisers 350 (260HP). Any idea of what kind of cruising speed am looking to get? Any idea on fuel burn? Are these " good " boats on the water? Anything i should know about them?Thank you.Bob, If you see this, this is George from NY.
George, how are you? That was a Formula you were working on, wasn't it? You get that done?

I do not have floscan, so I can't give you accurate numbers, but it is not easy on fuel. I cruise around 3,000RPM at approx. 19knts at average load, light seas. With the old wheels, my cruise speeds were slower, and I was averaging 0.7-0.8nmpg on offshore fishing trips, which typically saw 70-75nm run in each direction and trolling in the gulf stream for 4-6hrs. Seas never seemed to cooperate with our planned trips, so I don't have any fuel numbers from a "smooth" trip...just heavy and heavier. I've not gone back offshore, or any long trips since putting the new propellers on the boat.Boat is certainly not what I would term a "battlewagon" and has lot of rattles, pops, bangs, etc. when running in heavy seas relative to some other boats I've run or been on in similarly snotty conditions. For the price I paid for mine (cheap) and the overall space I've got on the boat, I just accept that for what it is and keep getting up.I'd say in the price range they typically seem to sell in, they're good/great boats. On the other hand, before I'd pay top-dollar for a cherry condition 290, I'd probably look to other boats in that size range...but that's just my $0.02 based on my particular usage. If you hit any specific questions, feel free to try me.
George, I believe standard Volvo 5.7's were putting out 260 HP, so yes, definitely a drop off in speed compared to the Vortecs. If you were going to look at comparison-sized boats that are more "canyon capable", I'd think you'd be looking at boats like an Albemarle, Carolina Classic, Blackfin Combi, boats such as those. But I doubt you'd find one the same condition as the 290 for $5K...
OK, the 290 did not work out, but i saw a very good looking 270 TM. She comes with new 5.7 260 HP inboards. Anybody has info on this boat?I would like to know the weight also.
Thank you but i saw that. They only show the 270 with outboards and not with inboards which is what i have. I need to know the weight because i want to buy a trailer.
