I just checked the lam through the plastic covering and it is hard - probably not really hard but it had an inch of water in the trough around some of the lid. Sponged that out and I am glad it was covered with two layers of plastic so that water didn't get to the main lam before it really hardened.

I've gotten a little more done in the last week or so.  Once I have the transom glassed in, I will feel like I've gotten through the 1st of many "stages".  8)

I've removed all the old stringers (I have the hull supported very well) and I've done some grinding on the hull, fitted the core of the transom and glassed it together as a sandwich.

first, I layed in a nice smooth fillet of thickened resin on the transom area, so the new fiberglass will transition nicely up the transom.  That turned out great.  After that set up, the next day I glassed in a layer of 1708 on the transom skin to give it a little more thickness and continuity.  Then I started cutting and dry fitting the 3 core layers, one by one.

Update:

Transom not in yet.  Waiting on slow hardener to be delivered tomorrow from US Comp.  I should have the transom in this weekend if all goes well.

I've got another newbie questions...bare with me

I plan on laying in at least a layer of 1708 across the entire bottom of the hull before I install the stringers, in order to beef up the bottom of the boat and give myself a good base on which to start with the new stringers.

Can I go with poly resin for this? Obviously epoxy resin is probably recommended, but in an effort to save a little jingle....

Then i would use epoxy to glass in the stringers and go from there.

Thoughts/recommendations?

That's where you want to NOT scrimp on anything.  Go with epoxy and 1708, mat down.  Do half at a time and with slow hardener it'll take a day to harden.  Sounds like you're going through the same steps as I did on my rebuild.  Have you checked it out?  Will answer a lot of your questions as I asked the same thing.  http://www.classicaquasport.com/phpbb3/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=10101

Well I finally got the transom glued in.  I used the slow hardener from US Composites and I had plenty of time to work with it.  Started early on a cooler morning.  I scuffed up the surface to give it something to bite.  (a layer of 1.5oz mat was glassed onto the back side of the core first).  Then i mixed up some unthickened epoxy and applied a coat to both surfaces.  After that, I thickened the same batch with cabosil and troweled it on the transom skin, and then bolted it down as seen in the pictures. Overall it went well!

Next steps:

-A few layers of 1708/mat/tabbing to the transom.
-More grinding to the hull interior for stringer prep.
-Still trying to find stringer material
-Find (or build) a console
-Deciding on whether or not I should keep the liner!
