Just left fiberglass man.

Transom has some rotten wood, floor has some rotten wood, gunwale caps have some rotten wood.

His advice: let it eat, and let's reassess next winter at the soonest, but do NOT put that jack plate on.

His other advice: get a new gas tank.

So seems the prevailing classic aquasport opinion was confirmed.

A 0-5psi gauge and various fittings, adapters and hose clamps followed by a bicycle pump is my plan...

New gauges installed (to replace non-functioning set that were on the boat when purchased).  

Installed Faria tach, water pressure and voltmeter.  

Learned a few things:

1.) Water pressure is almost nil at idle, and never saw much north of 10psi on the throttle.  Was pretty steady at around 10psi when running on plane at various RPMs. That's a brand new impeller.  That acceptable?

2.) The motor is not running as smooth as I thought.  Idle hunts between 1,000 and 1,300.  On plane at around 3,800 it will surge to almost 4k, then fall back to under 3,800...feathering the throttle either up or down a hair seemed to smooth it out, but it definitely has something keeping her from running "perfect".

3.) The prop isn't correct.  Did one WOT run and saw 4,400.  Long straight, so I started trimming up and only edged out a few more RPMs before the prop started blowing out...  Motor will rev freely in N to north of 5,500 and it isn't stumbling or missing at WOT on plane, just seems like its over propped.

4.) Sucker charges all over the place...hit the trim and you see 10V, give it 20 seconds and you might see 14V, look down with it rev'd up...gauge near pegged at 16V.  That normal?

1) 6-12 psi normal
2) Fuel quality, carbs or timing
3) Try a different prop to obtain 5500-5700
4) Volt meters are notoriously inaccurate. But if its jumping around that much, I would verifying voltage at the battery with a digital VOM, check each cell with a hydrometer, you may also have a cracked plate in the battery which is giving you wild voltage spikes (this is not theory, I have experienced it), next look for loose or dirty connections in the charging system, and resistance test your battery cables. Your engine looks pretty salt crusty so anything is possible.

I already had a call into the guy who I've worked with on my (in relative terms) bigger props on the inboard boats.  He is a big fan of 4 blades, especially when I mentioned a jack plate.  Think we might see if he can scare up a loaner 4 blade to get me in the ballpark and then go from there.  Also going to try to do some bartering using 3 nibral wheels I have at the house from 2 boats ago so I hopefully don't come out of pocket, but do end up with a correctly propped 19-6.

So far I know I need carb work, and the water jacket cover ("head") gasket.  All in all very pleased with this motor though.  

I'll poke around with a meter at various points along the charging system and see what I've got, but I'll do that after this ice storm passes...dang double-edged sword: on the one hand, I'm almost sure to get off work early...on the other, I have no interest in going outside if the forecast is for 20deg and sleet/snow/ice mix.  All the more hilarious since yesterday was 72 and sunny.

Sounds like I've got okay water pressure...but I did get the teleflex/sierra impeller.  Have a recommendation on a good place for OEM Mercury parts?  My "local dealer" has next to nothing in stock and charges scary high prices for what he does have, so I'd just as well order online.

congrats on ur purchase salth20......i too recently bought a 1977 19 6 and in the midst of trying to restore in coooold weather.....hoping you could assist me with a measurement on ur boat? My 19 6 is missing the mahogony/teak footing trim that the center console rests on....I see urs is all there.  I'm looking for the width of the 2  long side footings that sit under either side of the console.....should be somewhere around 3 inches im guessing but would like to get the exact measurements from urs...., if you could send along would be much appreciated.....my email is kprouty@comcast.net or txt at 781 799 8943....thnx!

Edit to give measurement:  Appears to be 2 1/4", maybe was 2 3/8" at one point in its life.  Under the console the vertical surfaces of the console and the plinth are plus/minus in line with one another.  Outside the console, the plinth shows a varying reveal on mine of anywhere from 3/8" to 3/4", with most of it being in the 1/2"-5/8" range.  Essentially just looks like square stock that someone ran a roundover bit on one time, and if the inside had some extra, can't see where it would hurt a thing, so if you run across some 3" or even larger stock, I wouldn't think it'd be necessary to do much more than put a radius edge on the outside and choose your reveal and just let the inside be what it's going to be...
