Manual lift for outboard
« on: July 05, 2006, 08:26:23 AM »
The tilt motor on my 1998 Johnson outboard stopped working. I was able to lower the motor using the manual relese but now I can not lift the engine to trailer it to the repair shop. Does anyone know if it is possible to lift the engine by hand?
Thanks,
Dave

I don't know if it is the same for Johnsons but with my Mariner, you need to put the engine in gear to be able to tilt it up manually. Once it's up, you can shift back to neutral.

It has been quite a few years since I had a Johnson but I think there is a screw on the tilt cylinder that needs to be turned. Once it is backed out a few turns you can raise the motor by hand.

Good Luck!
