Cap Question

I am curious the reason for the cap on the transom and why AS didn't just rap the fiberglass around the top of the core?  It seems the cracking of the glass at the cap is common on alot of aquasports.  I am in the process of fixing this on my 17 Osprey and am just curious why the cap was there in the first place.

thats just what it is.the deck cap. lucky for us older ap owners they ground off to much glass or did'nt put enough on when the hull and cap were mated.we need a source for a cap cover like all the new o/b hulls have.
