Gunnel Rod Holder Distance
« on: January 21, 2014, 09:30:44 PM »
Hello All, I am a new member, will be getting my new to me 290Ex in March or April, depending on when mother nature allows for sea trial. What I am looking for is the distance between the two gunnel rod holders on each gunnel. My boat will be used on Lake Ontario primarily for salmon and trout. The boat is currently about 350 miles from me, just trying to get all  my ducks in a row so when she makes it home, I can start outfitting.
I have enjoyed looking over all the rebuilds, and will deff be picking some brains when I need to update anything. Thank You

Welcome aboard Captain Rich :salut:

Hopefully 290 owners will input regarding original factory position. But in general, on a rebuild, rod holder placement and angle are a matter of personal preference....based on the type of fishing you do.

You guys do a lot of downrigger/side-planer/backtrolling, etc. Take a look at some local boats your size to get ideas, maybe ask to hop on and move around the cockpit, etc.

Lee's makes a beautiful, high quality flush mount rod holder, with options on tube size and angle.

Thanks, welcome, and keep us posted :thumright:

Just my opinion...

If I'm setting up a new boat, I'll set the gunnel mount rod holders at 48" apart, with the aft holder located 12" to 18" fwd of the transom, which leaves plenty of room aft for downrigger bases...

Playing the flip side here with a question.

I'm guessing that you want to set something up as far as your style of fishing based on the current distance between the holders rather than installing new ones?

Hopefully a 290 owner will respond.

Good luck.

Thanks Guys, what I am trying to figure out is the distance between the factory flush mount gunnel holders. I want to put a track between the two holders if there is enough room. If the distance is too short I will go with a gimbal mount track for holders. I can't wait to get her home to start rigging. I will post pics as the work starts.  I will be mounting a high thrust yamaha kicker on a Bob's hydraulic Jack plate, and 3 Scotty High performance Downriggers across the back.
My next question is thru hull transducer placement, I will be adding a new Furuno fcv587 with a thru hull ducer, and new to get correct placement. Thanks for your time guys, I look forward to adding info when I can!!!!

Rich,
Obviously, you have done your research on the Airmar t/hull ducers, and proper placement (I assume you are going with the tiltable element, like the B60).  The "problem" with twin inboards is not only the props, but the rotating shafts...so you'll want to locate it fwd of the shaft logs and the main intakes.

Just fwd of the engine room b/head would seem like the perfect place to me...
