Fish box lids
« on: January 13, 2014, 09:36:51 AM »
I noticed at the end of last season that the (2) fish box lids on my 99' 215 DC were getting a little soft and starting to develop small cracks from water intrusion.  Someone mentioned that Marine Connection Liquidators may have these hatch lids, has anyone seen them?  If I can't get replacements I'm looking at probably around $800 to recore them at local fiberglass shop.

Mulv-

I'd venture to guess you should be able to re-core them yourself and not pay through the nose for something that doesn't require a cosmetic finish.  It's not an overly difficult project.  Do you have photos showing what you're dealing with?  My father re-cored his spongy forward casting deck hatches just by cutting out the old core on the underside, grinding the underside of the glass smooth, cutting and beveling new plywood core, epoxying the plywood to the glass and weighing it down on a flat surface to ensure the hatch maintained the correct shape, and then re-glassing the new core to the underside of the fiberglass skin.  I just did the same for my neighbor's coffin cover.  There are several threads on here showing re-coring of the coffin cover and your process should be similar.   I'd recommend epoxy over poly resin as long as you don't plan to gelcoat the finished glasswork  :salut:
