In need of a redneck windshield defroster
« on: January 05, 2014, 12:53:27 PM »
I need any ideas on a windshield defroster for my boat.
We went fishing yesterday temp around 27, not that cold but when you combine that with thick freezing fog it becomes a PITA.
By the time we got out of the marina windshield wipers where worthless on the iced up windshield
Had the radar overlapping the gps map so there was no concern about finding our destination .......oh boy does a oil tanker make a big target on the radar screen  ..........but it would sure be nice to at least be able to see out the windshield.
We no sooner then get up on plane and we run over 2 crab pot buoys,by the time I saw them all I had time to do was pop throttle in neutral and hope they wouldn't end up in the prop. Luck was with us

Years ago I had a 12 volt ceramic defroster made for boats but it was worthless.
Thinking about maybe trying to find a 12 volt hair dryer.

Any ideas ??
And no guys....... staying home is not a option

I bet you could make this work. Put a plug for a cig outlet on the end, plug it in when you need it.

I realize you don't have a windshield washer but possibly spraying with a de-icer product and then using the wiper. Means you would need to spay every so often.

I used the Rain-X stuff (claimed -25 degree) when I went to Virginia over the holidays. My truck was encased in ice each morn but I used the washer to break it up. Worked well but in an entirely different scenario.

Just a thought.

I've heard some of these aftermarket defrosters pull a lot of amperage... might be something to consider when you're shopping.

Yep,
That might do just what you need Bill. Costs seem reasonable too.

Nice find Dave. :thumleft:

Thanks to all  :salut:
Lewis , Dave
The frostfighter looks like probably the most efficient, but having to look through the heating elements all year round may get a little old.
Think I will go the cheapskate way and pick me up a 12 volt hairdryer from Wally world tomorrow. With a 8 ft cord it should reach the w/shield on the port side also, besides, when it's raining through my leaky top I can use it to dry my hair.

Thanks again for the links guys

Have you thought about something like this?  Get one of those units that cools and heats from Wal-Mart and you are good to go - both summer and winter:

That's a hell of a idea Cap'n
I just happen to have a spare 3500 watt Honda generator I was thinking about selling.
Now that I think about it I got a 6' base board heater kicking around here some where.
Ya think I could mount the generator in the cutty.
Probably have enough juice left in the generator to run a deep fryer.
Fishing and eating fried  chicken, I have heard it don't get no better then that.
